Shower arms come in a standard size with ½-inch NPT, but designs vary. The height of the water supply pipe and the showerhead height you want affect the type of shower arm you should choose. For example, a water outlet that’s located close to the ceiling would be suitable for a standard shower arm (small extension with a slight downward angle) or a straight arm model. Outlets situated lower in the shower allow for gooseneck shower arms, which can raise the showerhead's height.

In most cases, you can remove your showerhead without turning off your main water supply. You just need to make sure your shower isn’t on before you screw off the showerhead. That said, you may experience a small trickle of leftover water in the pipe. 

If you have an older showerhead, it may be a good idea to turn off the main water supply because this job can put pressure on the pipes. If you have a shower shut-off valve, it will be hidden somewhere in a nearby access panel.

Most shower pans can be cut to size, including those made from mortar, polystyrene, tile (and the under-tile ABS lining), and even solid surfaces. The only common shower pan material you cannot easily cut to size is cast iron because it is heavy, difficult to cut, and prone to rust once the protective enamel has been removed.
