"Our old fence had to have been nearly 2 decades old, made of wood, and decaying. It also covered a wider area up on the side of the hill where our property is which didn't make cutting the grass easy. It was an embarrassing eyesore I hated for years because its sheer size made it impossible to keep up with staining it, and the boards were coming off of it the longer it stayed up. We brought the fence in closer by about 8 feet, so now our side yard is HUGE. We also had a custom double wide gate added for easier access for the riding mower and moving big items, like the sectional, in and out of the house when we someday move. Plus it's vinyl so maintenance will be so much easier. Midtown Home Improvements did an excellent job from start to finish and we will definitely hire them again!"

"This is a maintenance free deck that should last my lifetime. On the higher end of the cost scale but I didn't want wood that would need stained or painted. And I especially didn't want decking material that deteriorates after 5 years. Or discolors and gets covered in mold. Very sturdy build. Build team asked me about any issues they ran into and together we worked out a plan. Very happy with the people and the deck."

"Great experience. Richard was great to plan with and arrived when he said he would. He put dropcloths down to cover the stairs underneath the area where he was working and ensured that the entire area was clean after. The install went great, he was able to change a couple of things on the fly, and he made the switches I bought that I really wanted to use work. When he left, you would honestly have never known he was there. And moreover, the cost was fair and I was happy... right in range with the midpriced quotes I'd gotten, and I don't feel like I gave up a single thing by using Richard over my quotes that were a good 50% more."

"Eric was very good at helping us with decisions on both projects. We came in close to budget and very minor issues which I think is unusual with any remodeling job. Eric has done a deck replacement, privacy fence replacement, deck door replacement and now a bath redo and kitchen back splash. We are already planning to redo the master bath next year and will not bother trying to get estimates from others as Eric seems to know what looks good and bow to stay within budget. He was a rare find and we can't give him anything but the highest recommendation. Just don't keep him so busy we can't get our next project scheduled. If you use him once, you will be hooked.

Patio Covers questions, answered by experts

The least expensive way to enclose a porch is with screens. These protect the room by preventing insects from entering and, if you live in a warm climate, provide excellent airflow during hot summer months. Screens cost far less than any other alternative, so if you are against getting permits, spending too much, or enclosing your porch in walls or glass, screens are the best choice.

The longest-lasting awning materials include vinyl, polycarbonate, and polyester for their durability and cleanability. Other materials like canvas and metal can last a long time, but may wear out faster. The key to getting the longest life from your awning material is to maintain it properly by cleaning yearly, keeping debris from gathering on it, and protecting it during stormy weather or high winds by retracting it or moving it to a protected area.

There are many materials to choose from, including picket fencing, wood slats, galvanized metal skirting, dog-ear fence panels, scallop wood fence panels, bamboo screens, and other decorative screens. You can search for materials at local big box stores like Home Depot or scour online home improvement sites. Good search terms to use are fencing, skirting, and privacy panels.

Yes, professionals offer eco-conscious options that balance durability and sustainability.

To ensure the installation process goes smoothly, it's wise to ask a potential pro several questions. Key topics to cover include:

  • Licensing and Insurance: Do you have a professional license and insurance to perform this work? This is crucial as installing an awning into a home's exterior can be a complex job.

  • Cost Estimate: What was the price of similar jobs you've completed? Awning installation costs can vary based on size, design, and location, so this helps establish a general price range.

  • Project Timeline: How long will this project take to complete? Getting an estimated timeline provides peace of mind, even though unforeseen hurdles can occur.

  • Building Permits: Will I need a building permit for this project, and who is responsible for obtaining it? An experienced local contractor will be knowledgeable about local rules and regulations.

  • References and Portfolio: Do you have references from previous clients or photos of completed projects? Speaking with past clients and seeing previous work can give you insight into their experience and the quality of their work.
