"This is a maintenance free deck that should last my lifetime. On the higher end of the cost scale but I didn't want wood that would need stained or painted. And I especially didn't want decking material that deteriorates after 5 years. Or discolors and gets covered in mold. Very sturdy build. Build team asked me about any issues they ran into and together we worked out a plan. Very happy with the people and the deck."

"They were awesome! I would hire them again in a minute. Already recommended them to the neighbors. They listened to my existing problems with our gutters, recommended solutions without an "up-sale" mentality. They booked the project within a week, on time to the job and efficient."

"Reynolds Construction did a terrific job building our screened in enclosure for our covered patio. They showed great skill and craftsmanship making our area into a bug free retreat. "Continental Siding installed siding and new windows on our home. Our goal was to be more prepared for our "Golden Years" and having a low mainenance home. I was first impressed with the communication before the installation. Then the job was done on time with no problems, even when the winter weather didn't cooperate. (20°). The workers were very pleasant and quick to offer suggestions and special help with designing a matching cover for our whole house fan that was on the side of the house. I can highly recommend Continental Siding. I will call them for my next home improvement job. Nancy and Richard Wylde, New Bloomfield, Mo."

Patio Covers questions, answered by experts

Hurricane fabric is a temporary form of hurricane protection that offers an alternative to boarding up windows or installing traditional storm panels. It is installed over windows, doors, and other openings before a storm. When installed properly, hurricane fabric is tested and proven to protect homes from Category 5 hurricanes, which can have winds over 157 miles per hour. It is intended to block the majority of wind and rain and protect against water, debris, and projectile damage. While the fabric is exceptionally durable, windows can still break if hit directly by high-velocity debris. Compared to other options, hurricane fabric is more protective than hurricane window film. Boarding up windows is more labor-intensive and requires storing heavy plywood, while hurricane screens are permanently attached to your home. To further increase protection, you can take additional steps like securing outdoor items and fortifying your home's foundation.

Besides the type of awning, you’ll need to choose the type of cover. Your awning installation professional will review your options with you, including availability and costs. The types of covers you can choose from include:

  • Wood, which is durable but can be damaged easily by rainwater and fire

  • Cotton offers flexibility, weatherproofing, and easy cleaning

  • Canvas is highly durable and is a good choice for retractable awnings

  • Metal is sturdy but is prone to rust

  • Polyester is easy to clean and is a more breathable option

  • Polycarbonate is highly resistant to UV rays and is difficult to damage

Awnings can be a serious investment for homeowners, particularly if it features a motorized and retractable design. Protect the exterior of your home by choosing a reliable and reputable contractor. Do some research ahead of time to get an idea of the potential contractor’s strengths and weaknesses. Don’t hesitate to give them a call to discuss specifics.

Yes, you can install an awning yourself, and it can be an excellent DIY project with immediate benefits. This is most feasible for smaller, pre-assembled units. However, awnings are often heavy and awkward for one person to handle, so you should always have at least one helper. If you have difficulty lifting heavy objects, professional installation is recommended to ensure proper mounting and durability.

Costs range from $1,000 to $5,000, depending on size, material, and design complexity.
