Customers say: Super punctual

"This is the fourth project we have had performed by Sam's Retaining Walls. Sam and his crew are always reasonably priced, professional, timely and provide superior quality. Our first project with Sam, consisting of several retaining walls in 2008 still look as if they were just installed yesterday."

"Finish Touch gets 5 stars from me. They built us a beautiful looking retaining wall at the rear of our house 4 years ago this month and were the low bidder by far--the bids ranged from over $17,000 to under $3000 for Finishing Touch with several others from 6k to 10k. I waited to post a review until now because build quality of a retaining wall can't be measured until after passage of time. Their wall has held up nearly perfectly over 4 years now so I believe it is justifiable to say it was properly built and the preparatory pre-construction work like ensuring drainage was all done well. On top of doing first rate work at the low price, a few months ago I contacted Mr. Watson about another potential job involving our crumbling and sagging concrete front steps and porch. He spent a good 20 minutes+ explaining we could get 90% of the benefit of redoing them by instead mud jacking them and using polymeric sand to fill a crack. He was right. I unreservedly recommend them."

"I purchased a landscape deal on Angie's site - 8 hours of work for the price of 4 hours.  Tom came out to look at what we wanted done soon after I purchased the deal. I asked if he could get the work done by a certain day, which was about 3 weeks away,  He never said he could but, he also didn't say he couldn't.  He emailed me an estimate the next day.  I approved it and he said he follow up with a time.  Ten days later I still hadn't heard from him.  I emailed him and told him we were leaving town in a few days (this was the day I had hoped to have the work done by) and he could do the work while we were gone but he would have to wait for payment until we were back.  He replied and said he hoped to come before we left.  Needles to say he did not come before we left nor did he come the two weeks we were gone.  When we returned home I wrote to him outlining the sequence of events since our agreeing to the contract and asked for our money back since he seemed to have taken on more work than he could handle.  He showed up the next day with his crew and did the job.  We were initially very impressed with Tom's knowledge and looked forward to his company doing the work.  Though we understand weather plays a great role in a landscapers schedule we talked to our son while we out of town and he said it did not rain while we were gone.  So we, unfortunately, will either look for another landscaper or return to our former one.

"The entire experience was excellent. The owner Steve, personally came to my house to look at my project and give me his bid. He listened to what I wanted, made some suggestions, very professional. The office workers were very good about scheduling and payment options. I was not home to witness the installation, but Ron the foreman called me to let me know the project was finished and gave me watering instructions and answered all my questions."

"Absolutely, 10 out o10! From the moment Chris responded to our request for landscaping help, to the completion of the job, we could not have been happier or more satisfied. He listened to what we were looking for and had great suggestions. His price was very fair and what we appreciated most was how dependable he was. He did exactly what he told us he would do in a very timely manner. Chris had a great crew. He picked out beautiful plants. They prepared the soil, planted the bushes and tree, delivered and installed the perfect complementing rock, and expertly trimmed the existing bushes we were keeping. If you have the opportunity to work with Chris and his crew, don't hesitate! Mike and Tina"

"Called Dedicated Turf 11/1 @ 3pm, owner Tom answered the call. I asked for a quote and timeline to aerate, seed and fertilize my lawn, he quoted me and said he could do it 11/2 @ 8:30am. I compared his bid with another vendor and his bid was lower. I called him back and booked the service. He showed up on time and finished in 45 minutes. He was pleasant, professional and courteous. I would hire him again."

Retaining Wall Installers questions, answered by experts

Depending on who you hire to build a retaining wall, the average cost, including demolition and reconstruction, for a 50-foot wall that's 4 feet in height is between $7,000 and $24,000.

If you don’t backfill a retaining wall—either at all or adequately enough—the wall won’t drain well, and water will be able to pass through it. Poor drainage will lead to a warped wall or a buildup of hydrostatic pressure, which can eventually collapse your retaining wall. If you have particularly sloped land, consult a structural engineer to ensure your hardscaping is adding value to your home.

Regular inspection for issues like cracks or leaning and ensuring drainage stays clear.

Railroad ties can be good for retaining walls, but it depends on the area. They have a desirable rustic look and are durable. The problem is they’re treated with creosote, a preservative the EPA says poses a risk to humans and wildlife. Over time, the preservative seeps out of the wood and into the ground. Many areas have banned the use of creosote-treated wood on residential properties. If your area does allow it, never use railroad ties near an edible garden or drinking water source. Instead, use wood that’s treated with an EPA-approved preservative or a wood-alternative composite material.

Yes, to build a retaining wall, a permit is required. Similarly, any repairs or modifications to an existing retaining wall require permits. If the planned wall measures higher than 4 feet, most municipalities require designs and permits come through a licensed engineer. In some locations, if the wall is shorter than 4 feet, a permit may not be required. For the requirements in your area, contact your local government.
