"Evan came in a timely fashion, worked efficiently and was very knowledgeable about my home's central vacuum system even though it had been installed by some else years ago. He is a hard worker who obviously knew what he was doing. No high pressure sales!! I honestly think he did a great job. I would definitely recommend him to friends as well as use his services in the future. Great Job!!!"

"John was very knowledgeable about my central vacuum. He came in and immediately figured out what was wrong with my vacuum and fixed it. He is a very friendly man. He even checked out my unit in the basement to make sure it was working properly. He cleaned the unit and the filter. I would refer him to my family and friends."

"I had another company diagnose a compressor failure on my 9 year old heat pump. I decided to get a new heat pump. After calling around and getting quotes I went with Fresh Air because they sell name brand products and were very responsive and punctual unlike all other companies I got quotes from. The technician was on time and kept me involved in the install/testing process. It's rare to have a good experience from the service industry, but Fresh Air delivered with no surprises."

"We found SmartHouse almost by accident while looking for solutions to what turned out to be botched previous AC installation by a much bigger and more established company who we had trusted to do a decent job. Instead we ended up with a system that wouldn't cool the house. Smarthouse first correctly diagnosed the problem, then fixed it, and advised us on how best to heat and cool our 100+ old house. We now have a service contract with them for regular maintenance and they recently installed a mini-split for us. Their techs are great. Just the sort of people we would feel comfortable leaving alone in the house to finish a job if necessary."

"Both the estimator Kevin the two installers who visited my home were very professional and kind. They answered all my questions and provided a very reasonable price for the installation of the attic insulation. I feel I was very informed on the federal rebate that was available for this installation, as well as on the recommendations of quantity of insulation I needed per residential standards and codes. I would recommend Anton and will use them in the future for my HVAC needs!"

Install Central Vacuum questions, answered by experts

No. Only the hose or the attachments are portable in a central vacuum system. A portable vacuum is a standalone model like a stick, canister, or upright. A central vacuum system is defined by a central power unit, which is installed in one place like an AC unit, and the connected network of piping to funnel the suction.

They’ll use more electricity than the average upright vacuum, but not remarkably more. Most power units plug into a standard 120-volt outlet and don’t have significant power demands. You shouldn’t notice an increase in electricity bills. If you have any specific questions about energy costs, ask your installer as you examine purchase decisions. Larger power units will need more electricity for their suction levels.

Experienced professionals don’t usually need to take down drywall to install the central vacuum. They are experienced in working in the tight spaces between walls and in crawl spaces to minimize any damage. The only drywall changes should be the holes cut for the new outlets. However, home design, existing plumbing, and other factors may require some modification. An estimate from a professional contractor should include information if any changes need to be made.

The disadvantages associated with central vacuums start with cost. They are expensive to install, especially in existing homes, as retrofitting requires opening walls. The system's bulky hoses can also be inconvenient to maneuver and store compared to portable vacuums. Additionally, repairs may need professional service, adding to maintenance costs. Lastly, while powerful, they may be overkill for smaller homes or apartments, making the investment less practical for some households.

Before deciding whether or not to install a central vacuum system, consider the pros and cons to determine if it’s right for you.

Pros

  • Increased suction power

  • Improved air quality

  • Reduced noise pollution

  • Longer lifespan than traditional self-contained vacuum units

Cons

  • Higher upfront installation costs

  • Expensive repairs

  • Requires significant storage space
