"All members of the GIC team were friendly, courteous, knowledgeable and professional. After measuring our job, they provided us an accurate, reasonable bid. They showed up exactly when they said they would, completed the work (energy audit and attic insulation) conscientiously and on time. They were very patient, explaining things as they went. Outstanding contractors, very trustworthy. We would highly recommend them."

"He's a really friendly guy, very responsive to my calls, schedules me in partly because we've had a working relationship for like six years. He's done work at the house that I live in. He replaced a furnace there and the air conditioner. The day before the warranty of the air conditioner that he had installed ran out, he installed a new one and it didn't work either. He went to the local manufacturer's distribution and got a third one and it didn't work either so he went and got me a brand new upgraded unit and a discount for all the inconvenience. He's a good guy and I have no complaints whatsoever. Sometimes, some of the worker bees that he sends when he is on a job and somebody has to come and check something, they come right away but they are not necessarily as diligent as he is."

"Very well.  Morning Star referred me to a free energy audit as a Missouri resident which will provide a $400 credit to my utilities.  The windows installed were double pane Heartland windows.  I've seen a significant reduction in my electric bill this summer immediately.   The installers did a great job.  I will be asking for their assistance again to finish the remainder of my windows.

"Donohue’s lightning protection done me a wonderful job. Our neighbors house was struck and it scared us so we did some researching and found there company. There was 300 miles between us and Seamus said that was no problem he will start our way because he had a high call volume in our area. After weighing our options we decided to have Donohue’s do it and I couldn’t be happier we feel much safer in our home."

"Dan does a great job explaining the process. He also did an energy audit which is the first time we've ever had one done. It can be an eye opener as to the air leaks, etc. He was quick to return phone calls and was very professional."

Energy Efficiency Auditing questions, answered by experts

There are a few ways to reduce your electricity bills if you use window AC units to keep cool. Set the unit temperature at least 1 degree higher than it is currently to reduce costs. Keep the unit clean for it to run efficiently. You may want to hire a window AC specialist near you to inspect the unit once a year and keep it in tip-top shape.

A blower door test shouldn’t take more than an hour, and most can be completed in less than 30 minutes. Expect the test to take longer once you start searching for leaks with thermal imaging or want to include sealing such leaks in the time estimate. The test doesn’t take much time and can’t be rushed, but it will take longer in large homes or those with many air leaks.

To determine the right size generator for your house, you should calculate the total wattage of the appliances and devices you want to power during an outage. List all essential items, note their start-up wattages, and add them together.

Here are some typical wattage requirements for common appliances:

  • Refrigerator: 600 watts

  • Large dehumidifier: 700 watts

  • Large window air conditioner: 1,400 watts

  • Water heater: 3,000 to 4,500 watts

  • Electric furnace: 5,000 to 25,000 watts

A 7,500-watt generator might be sufficient for essentials like a refrigerator, freezer, well pump, and lighting circuits. However, for high-demand items like a water heater or furnace, a whole-home generator is a better choice. A portable generator may be enough if you only need to power a few critical items.

While home square footage can offer a rough estimate, it is not always a reliable indicator. For reference, here are some typical generator sizes based on square footage:

  • 1,000 sq ft: 6–9 kW

  • 1,500 sq ft: 7–10 kW

  • 2,000 sq ft: 10–14 kW

  • 2,500 sq ft: 12–16 kW

  • 3,000 sq ft: 16–20 kW+

For the most accurate sizing, consult a professional who can calculate your home's peak and average power consumption and recommend the optimal generator.

Upgrade to double-glazed glass or apply energy-efficient coatings to reduce heat loss and utility costs.

A home energy audit costs about $420 on average, with prices ranging from $100 to $2,250 or more. The final cost depends on factors like your home's size, location, the thoroughness of the audit, and the specific tests performed. A basic Level 1 walk-through inspection typically costs between $150 and $200, while a comprehensive Level 3 audit with detailed testing and a report costs around $900. Homeowners may be able to use the 2022 Inflation Reduction Act’s Energy Efficient Home Improvement credit to cover up to $150 of the audit cost.

Costs for common individual tests include:

  • Blower door test: $350

  • Duct testing: $100

  • HERS test: $375

  • HERS certification: $200

  • Infrared imaging: $200
