"This contractor was hired by my 67 year old mother. Contractor was very attentive at first. Paid for 1/2 the project up front. He then started missing a day here or there. Would not return phone calls. Then would just show up one day, work for a few hours thenhen disappear again. Sometimes for weeks at a time. He was to redo my brick fireplace and after the 3rd try, me guessing he had know idea what or how to do what I was wanting and instead of telling me this he just kept getting deeper into trouble. He then asked for additional money for the carpet. I have not heard from him since. A 7-10 day project has turned into 90+ days and it is still not completed. My aluminum outlets were replaced by him with Copper and the special glue that is to go on the wiring was omitted! FIRE HAZARD. He was to hang a ceiling fan and there was no ceiling fan support box installed. It would have fallen if he would have installed. Stay away from this contractor. I have had another contract try and contact him for my carpet that I paid for and he will not return that phone call either."

Earthquake Retrofitting questions, answered by experts

Hearing or feeling vibrations in your house can be unsettling, but there are a few possible causes for a vibrating noise in your wall or floor. Light bulbs and fixtures, circuit breakers, loose pipes, or faulty wiring could all cause vibrations. If you’re not sure what’s causing the vibrations, you can call a contractor to assess your home and narrow down the cause.

According to the Earthquake Country Alliance—a public and private alliance in California that works to improve earthquake and tsunami readiness—reports that unreinforced masonry, such as stone, bricks, and hollow clay tiles, is more susceptible to earthquake damage. The mortar between bricks isn’t as stable as other building materials and methods.

A home with proper earthquake retrofitting can sustain minimal damage in earthquakes of up to 7.0 magnitude, although risks are higher based on how close and deep the earthquake is. A home closer to the earthquake epicenter will sustain greater damage, especially if the earthquake is closer to the surface of the Earth, but retrofitting can help minimize the risk of injuries.

Even if you invested in the cost of a gas shut-off valve for your oven and other appliances, it’s a good idea to add a seismic shut-off valve as an extra safety measure.

Gas shut-off valves for appliances are manual, meaning someone has to cut off the flow of gas. This leaves room for error, as you might not be home or might be too distracted to think about gas lines during an earthquake. An earthquake valve is automatic and will protect your home from gas-related disasters in the event of an earthquake.

Costs vary as much as timelines. The average earthquake retrofit costs between $3,500 and $8,700. However, homes on hillsides, large homes, and those with rooms over garages can cost up to $12,000 or more. Make sure to get a few estimates to compare the cost and services.
