"I called Alarm Protection Group AFTER my office was burglarized. Now I feel SAFE. William is great to work with. He's neat and tidy, prompt, presentable - not a butt-crack type of guy, and he doesn't leave a mess in his wake. He's also knowledgeable about the equipment and only uses high-quality products."

"After a couple of unexpected incidents of vandalism in my neighborhood, I decided it is finally time to get serious about security. Angie's List led me to ADT; Fisher (last name) came over to my house the same day I called and walked through my entire place to give suggestions on the security system that best fit my needs. He is helpful and knowledgeable without a hint of pushy sales person. Fisher also secured a next day installation for me. The next day, Hector came to install, it was complex with a wifi camera and a bunch of sensors. Hector was polite, knowledgeable, super helpful and very neat in his installation. He provided a great demonstration and training on how to use the equipment and gave some great suggestions. I had some trouble with the camera the 1st night and I called Hector at 8:30pm, he trouble shoot my problem and resolved it in less than 30 minutes. Overall, a flawless experience. Fast, caring and professional - I would recommend them to anyone looking for a security system. To top it off, the pricing was very reasonable and there are always specials for installation. Two big thumbs up for Fisher and Hector!"

"There were many things wrong in my computer (my fault and letting grandchildren on computer) Robert was so helpful, gave me many good instructions to keep everything safe, which I have written down, feel like I have a new computer. He was so excellent and experienced, took his time and was meticulous about what needed to be done. He was a pleasure to work with and I will use this company again! Linda Disy"

Locksmiths questions, answered by experts

Smart deadbolts are a worthwhile investment for homeowners seeking more convenience, flexibility, and advanced features than a traditional deadbolt can provide. While a strong conventional deadbolt offers sufficient security for most, smart deadbolts provide significant upgrades.

Key benefits include keyless entry via smartphone, keypads, or biometric sensors, and the ability to lock or unlock your door remotely. You can also manage access for guests by creating temporary codes, eliminating the need for physical keys and the risk of them being lost or duplicated. Many models integrate with smart home systems and offer features like automatic locking, entry-exit monitoring, and tamper alerts with encryption for enhanced security.

However, there are downsides to consider. Smart deadbolts are more expensive than their traditional counterparts and rely on batteries and wireless networks to function. This dependency introduces potential vulnerabilities, such as hacking by skilled intruders and privacy concerns. Installation can also be more complex. Despite these drawbacks, the added layer of convenience and protection makes them a compelling option for many.

The cost-effectiveness of fixing or replacing a door lock depends on the severity of the issue. Repairing a minor problem, such as loose screws or a need for lubrication, is usually cheaper than replacing the entire lock. However, replacing the lock if it is severely damaged, outdated, or lacks security features may be a better long-term investment. New locks often have improved security features, enhancing your property's safety.

There are several situations when you should change or replace your locks to ensure your home's security. Key moments include moving into a new house, after a break-in or attempted break-in, or when a roommate or anyone else with a key moves out. It is also wise to change your locks if you lose your keys, especially if they have an address attached or you suspect they were stolen. Finally, if your locks are old, broken, worn out, or have become unreliable, they should be replaced.

Several types of deadbolts are available, including single-cylinder, double-cylinder, rim, smart, and electronic deadbolt locks. The most common type found in U.S. homes is the single-cylinder deadbolt, which uses a key on the exterior and a thumb turn on the interior. A double-cylinder deadbolt features two locking mechanisms and requires a key to be operated from both the inside and the outside.

It is best to use a dry lubricant, such as a Teflon-based option, for door locks. Unlike popular oil-based lubricants, dry lubricants leave a non-stick, water-repellent coating that does not attract dust, dirt, and other debris. Using an oil-based lubricant can cause these particles to build up inside the lock, making it difficult to operate or even damaging the internal mechanism. You can find dry lubricants, some of which are made specifically for locks, at most hardware stores.
