Overseeding typically involves spreading grass seed either manually or with a machine that sprays the grass seed out and onto the soil. With overseeding, the grass seeds sit on the soil, and some may fall deeper into the soil if you aerated beforehand. With power seeding, a machine cuts narrow rows into the soil and pushes the grass seeds directly into the soil.

The easiest way to rough up soil to accept grass seed and provide the best opportunity for its growth is to make several passes over the area with a garden tiller and rake away the loosened vegetation and debris. However, in some cases, very hard ground may require using a shovel or pick to break up pieces into smaller chunks that the tiller can handle more easily.

While hydroseeding is designed for bare soil, it is possible to apply it over an existing lawn with certain adjustments. For the new seed to be successful, it needs good seed-to-soil contact to germinate and take root. Without proper preparation, most of the new seed will fail to establish and will die. To hydroseed over existing grass, first mow the lawn as low as possible, then loosen and clear any exposed soil. Although these terms sound similar and are sometimes used interchangeably, overseeding and reseeding your lawn are very different processes. Reseeding a lawn is a more drastic and involved process, often necessary if the lawn is diseased, more than a third dead, or very overgrown with weeds. Unlike overseeding, it requires removing most of the existing lawn and starting a new one from scratch, a much bigger and more time-consuming job.
