"Tom did the work in the said manner and time, as promised. I was put in a difficult situation, and thankfully I found Tom. From the review of his work experience, Mr. Van de Reit, appears to be a trusted carpenter and offered a solution that allowed me to keep my room enclosed without the expense of having to tear off and rebuild. He had also told me, he had done work in my street before, So, that being said, I felt he is a trusted individual and worth hiring for carpentry positions."

"They removed the steps to my deck. Replaced several deck boards and replaced boards to several bad areas. Build railing enclosing open area by steps. Power washed and stained enclosed deck and open deck. Fred was very courteous and informative. Did excellent work and was able to come out sooner than first thought. Would highly recommend his services to anyone interested. He was very easy to work with."

"Very well! So much of the wood on our porch needed to be replaced and he was very helpful in knowing and getting what we needed to finish the project. He kept us informed on the progress and asked our opinion on how we wanted things to look. All the work was done in a few days and it all turned out looking great!"

"Matt is fantastic! I hired him to do some carpentry work. I know nothing about such things, and he made sure to explain everything—what he recommended, different things he could do, why he was doing certain things—and he included me in every step of the process. In addition, he is very responsive and communicates really well and PROMPTLY! He takes his work seriously, and it shows. I’ll definitely be hiring him again, and I highly recommend him!"

"Mostly swapping out electrical outlets.  However, additional tasks included switching out drain pipes under a sink and building a railing for an exterior staircase.  We had a long list.  It went very well.

"Bradan did a fantastic job installing a new exterior door. (We are redesigning our garage and needed a man door) and putting in vinyl steps on both sides of the door. He completed ahead of schedule and his prices were extremely reasonable. I would definitely recommend him for any project you have. I will definitely be using him again! 100% satisfied."

Carpentry questions, answered by experts

Yes, you will need a jack for a rim joist replacement. To prevent sagging and facilitate the removal of load-bearing wood, you’ll need to relieve the pressure from this joint before beginning work.

Due to hydraulics and other specialized equipment, a sill plate and rim joist replacement are not typically a DIY project. Hiring a professional structural engineer and experienced contractors is the best approach to replacing rotted sill plates and rim joists.

Yes, a one-story house can have a load-bearing wall. The load-bearing walls in a single-story home are usually the exterior walls. If the house has a basement with exposed walls, the arrangement of the beams can help indicate what walls are load-bearing.

Removing a load-bearing wall affects the structural integrity of your home, so you’ll need a permit before starting the work. Building codes vary by municipality, and obtaining a permit and having the work inspected after completion will ensure you’re in compliance with all applicable regulations.

Framing a house with steel generally takes less time—around five to eight weeks—than most building materials. The steel components can also be made quickly off-site and manufactured with pre-punched holes for running piping and electrical wiring, which will lessen the prep work and extra labor during construction.

Yes, ceiling joists are typically load-bearing. However, their primary function is to support the weight of the ceiling and loads applied to it, like lighting fixtures and ceiling fans. They can also help support the roof, especially if they’re part of truss systems. Remember, the load-bearing capacity of ceiling joists depends on the material, size, and space between them.
