"Mike was great to work with. He replaced a skylight for us for the price that was proposed, and everything looks good. We've had him come back for other roofing needs since then."

"Rod called right away after I put in a request for bids. He came out and gave a competitive quote and gave me a timeline of when he could get the work done which was only a week out. He is professional and friendly. The day prior to our skylight replacement he confirmed appointment and time he would be out. He completed work and the finished job is amazing. I would most definitely hire him again."

"Excellent craftsmanship, very responsive to our input, and great communication. Very willing to accommodate changes along the way. We uncovered a number of "old house surprises" in both projects and were offered multiple solutions at a range of prices for each, so we never felt forced into additional or unexpected charges."

"I found Paul to be a pleasant and honest business man. He was the only one of several service magic contractors that personally evaluated my project, offered a reasonable estimate and followed up courteously, I found his associate that installed the skylight flashing to be very thorough and obviously an expert at roofing details. It has not been long enough to know if the solution worked. Only a season of winter will show that. However I am very confident that my problem skylight is repaired."

Skylights questions, answered by experts

Water will leak through a skylight if there are issues in the sealing of the skylight. Find and fix those issues yourself if possible, but it’s a good idea to contact a professional, as there could be much more water damage than you initially saw. Plus, it’s dangerous to work on a roof without the proper safety equipment and know-how.

Costs depend on skylight size, roof type, and additional features like blinds or tinting.

Yes, you can install skylights on an existing roof, and it’s a common service that many homeowners opt for, especially on older homes built when skylights weren’t as prevalent. The installation process will be a bit more involved, and the design and planning process will take longer, meaning you’ll pay more to install a skylight on an existing roof than you would in new construction. The process involves cutting a hole in the roof, moving rafters, if necessary, and installing and sealing around the skylight.

Yes, skylights can affect a home’s energy efficiency, either positively or negatively. Properly installed, energy-efficient skylights with Low-E coatings, double glazing, and UV-blocking glass can help regulate indoor temperatures and reduce heating and cooling costs. However, poorly insulated or older skylights can contribute to heat loss in winter and excess heat gain in summer, lowering overall energy efficiency.

Yes, solar tubes work during the winter as long as it’s light outside and they aren’t covered by snow. Sun tunnels are made to work year-round to bring in natural light, and some people find them even more beneficial during the winter. With less daylight outside, it can be even more important to bring brightness into homes to reduce electricity costs.
