"This was to be a 6 - 8 week project. We started on September 15th. We expected it to be done mid to late November. It is not complete as of January 18th. We have sheet rock dust everywhere, on all walls, floors cabinets, etc. We have walls that need to be repainted, trim to be done, carpet to lay, plumbing to complete, some cabinet work to finish and Custom Bi-fold doors to make for the oversized framing of the openings, and closet shelves to install. I am leaving things off the list I am sure but you get the picture. Our main contact, Lance, has not contacted us in 3 weeks. Our project sits. My thinking is that he is walking away from it as his last communication with us was to have a worker pick up a check from us in December for our carpet and flooring overage. He didn’t buy carpet is our guess as we have not gotten a install date, we were promised a schedule on December 27th. The team that was used for framing did not have enough experience. Almost all walls are not square or plumb. All Door openings were framed too tall and wide, including the Bi-fold Closet Doors. This team was also used to sheetrock. When I pointed out to Lance the many issues with their work he shrugged it off as not being too bad. Too few screws in the field and too many in other places. All outlet, light switch and register vents were cut larger than the cover plates. Requiring after the fact repair work. A pro sheetrocker would have flipped his lid. The taping and mudding was done by this team as well. They used way too much mud, ineffective use of tape and mud made for much much more sanding. They didn’t bother isolating the basement so we had weeks and weeks of sheetrock dust on our main and 2nd floor and that is with the furnace OFF whenever the team was here. The ceiling is passable save for a few areas that have noticeable valleys that are 4 plus feet long. Not all of the sanding is done yet but the walls are painted and have been patched in numerous locations and repainted, so the paint do not match up now. I can go on of course and I am not trying to bash. I am being honest about our experience. We have no idea when the end is and we feel that they have abandoned us for greener pastures. That’s what the lack of communication leads us to believe at least."

I am mostly a sole proprietor, but collaborate with a network of people to get a wide variety of projects done. I tend to specialize in custom higher end projects but can do it all. I was a licensed commercial general contractor in Boston, MA for 15 years. I chose to down size, and enjoy the smaller projects requiring finesse and 35 years of experience.

BoxBlu provides Quick Ship, Super High Quality, Amazingly Inexpensive Semi-Custom Cabinetry. We warranty the correctness of the design and ensure that the cabinets you order are appropriate for the space. SERVICE, AFFORDABLITY, LEAD TIME & QUALITY. This combination is not available anywhere else in the Twin Cities market!

"We were looking for a kitchen designer for our cabin, the kitchen space was large and we needed help in the design process. The salesperson was great he designed and created a layout. We ordered the cabinets, were told that it would be 6-8 weeks. This is where the good experience ended. We were passed onto the ordering person Paul, this is when everything started falling apart. I will keep the facts list short for this post. It has been over 2 years since our initial order we are still missing nearly a third of our order. I have a log of hundreds of calls and texts to every member of the company from the owners on down. They dodge and blame each other and the customer, they give stories about mistakes that if they did happen should not be shared with the customer. They took over $20K from us, and over two years of wasted time. They have multiple names for the company, so buyer beware don't give payment in full until the final product is delivered."

Cabinet Making questions, answered by experts

If you want to contain how much your cabinet doors can open, you may need to add cabinet door restraints or hinge restrictor clips. Both allow you to adjust how far your cabinet door opens so it won’t hit the wall.

For most purposes, you should go with wood that’s at least 3/4-inch thick for DIY closet shelves. This is the standard thickness for solid wood or MDF shelving and should be able to hold a good amount of weight (around 80 pounds for MDF and 130 pounds for plywood). If you’re storing tools, camera equipment, or other heavier items, you can go up to 1 1/4-inch thickness for maximum strength and durability.

Liquid sandpaper is a solvent used to soften existing layers of paint and make them porous enough that you can effectively apply a new coat of paint. You rub the liquid sandpaper on, wait for it to work, and wipe it off—no literal sanding is involved. Liquid sandpaper can save time and is helpful if parts of the cabinet are hard to reach with standard sandpaper. However, like paint stripper, liquid sandpaper creates dangerous fumes and must be used with care indoors. And unlike sanding, it can’t fix any scratches or dings in your cabinets.

All inset cabinets are face frame cabinets, but not all face frame cabinets are inset cabinets. You have three main cabinet door styles to choose from with face frame cabinets: inset, partial overlay, or full overlay. With inset cabinets, the doors and drawers are mounted inside the face frames, so the fronts of the cabinets are flush when everything is closed.

Plywood offers excellent stability and strength for drawer construction. Baltic birch plywood provides a premium appearance, while standard hardwood plywood offers good value. Solid wood works well but requires more attention to grain direction and seasonal movement.
