"This company was hired by contractor for street reconstruction in our area. The results speak for themselves and are awful. Friedges is always low bidder on a project...you get what you pay for and results are terrible. Their hydroseed process includes low quality soil...low quality seed and general case less attitude of workers in your yard. Most lawns including mine in the area are now full of weeds and dead grass where nice green turf once was. I waited to write this review until they had a second chance at making things right. Second attempt worse than the first. I would recommend not hiring this company for any independent projects. Quality is not there."

"We hired Aspen based upon some recommendations from the local neighborhood website. Gary was very responsive to our initial inquiries and was easy to set up an appointment with. He came out and visited with us to take a look at the job and give us a rough estimate on the spot. Over the next week, he provided us with a more in-depth estimate. We contacted a few other places to get competing bids but nobody had time/showed interest/responded, so we went with Gary. We live in a townhouse so we really wanted to just repair/replace the flower box, bushes, and other stuff that were around our porch area. What we had was all original and looked, to be frank, really dated. We also wanted something that would require very little maintenance, especially with the plants (we wanted to have them planted and be done with any upkeep, apart from watering), and Gary had some great recommendations for us. He had several jobs going at once but kept on top of our project. In the end, it was completed ahead of schedule (no complaints from me!). His workers were at our house for two days and were friendly and professional. They were also really focused on the job. I watched them a few times (I worked from home) and saw them taking the job seriously in terms of getting correct measurements and using leveling tools. When it was done, Gary followed up with us and told us about what needed to be done with maintaining our new plants and so forth. The project turned out great. The hydrangeas and rose bushes all look fantastic, and the new flower boxes and tiered hostas look really nice. Our neighbor is envious. We'd work with Gary again."

Mulch and Topsoil questions, answered by experts

The best type of rock for landscaping depends on your needs. If you want to build an affordable driveway, consider gravel. If you want an aesthetically pleasing patio, you can’t go wrong with flagstone. If you’re building a water feature, consider river rock as the base. Start by figuring out your landscaping project, then choose the best rock for that project.

The amount of soil you’ll need around your foundation depends on a variety of factors, but in general, you want a 6-inch decline over the first 10 feet extending out from your foundation. How much soil it will take to achieve that will depend on the current grade of the yard, how much foundation is exposed, and the size of your home.

Yes. One of the main benefits of organic mulch is weed prevention. Organic mulch forms a physical barrier that blocks light and stops weeds from germinating. It can reduce your need to weed and improve the physical appearance of your garden.

Under artificial turf, you can lay a subbase, fabric weed barrier, or both. Subbased materials typically include a collection of decomposed limestone and granite or specifically mixed road base. The layer supports water drainage and keeps your artificial turf from sinking and pooling rainwater. If you’re unsure what to put under your artificial turf, call an artificial turf installer near you.

The best mulches for trees are wood chips, bark nuggets, or pine straw. Depending on your goals, you may want to avoid using plastic, stone, rubber, or wet grass clippings. Plastic mulch prevents water from reaching the mulched areas of your tree, stones don’t offer any nutritional benefits to the soil, rubber can release byproducts into the soil when it decomposes, and wet grass clippings can lead to rot.

Plastic may prove beneficial in cold climates in the winter, but wood chips are the ideal option for most environments.
