"We hired Folie Roofing from Waseca to replace the roof on our 120-year-old farmhouse. The house had some complicated areas that had been problematic in the past, and I wanted to be sure to get a crew that was conscientious, experienced and knowledgeable. I was assured that we’d get the crew we needed which turned out to be the Guraro crew headed by Jim Folie. I’ve a history with roofers having had three roofs replaced over the years, and not all have been great; one actually lied to my face about some work that was on-going that eventually turned out to be a problem. As a result, I’m not an easy customer: I know about roofs, what it takes to do the job right, and I make this very clear from the beginning. Once I met Jim, I was confident that all would be well. And it was. From making sure the shingles were delivered to an exact spot on the lawn, to the last piece of debris removed, Jim was right there taking care of everything and making sure I was happy. The crew showed up on time, worked hard and late into the afternoon. They couldn’t have been better. All-in-all, we couldn’t have been happier with the work they did and the way they did it. The crew was great, and Jim always went the extra mile. This kind of service is all too rare these days, and we were so lucky to have it. Thanks guys!"

Siding questions, answered by experts

Vinyl, brick veneer, stucco, steel, stone veneer, and composite siding are popular alternatives to wood siding. Which siding material is best for your home boils down to your budget, aesthetics, lifestyle, and climate. For example, stone veneer offers a timeless charm and is low maintenance but may have too high of a price tag. Meanwhile, some homeowners love vinyl siding for its low cost, while others dislike it for its appearance and shorter life span.

You should consider acclimating the wood for your shou sugi ban siding for around two weeks before installation to balance its moisture content and prevent warping. That additional step will ensure your materials are prepped for installation, avoiding complex repairs down the line. Consult your siding contractor for additional installation instructions for this specialized material.

Before applying paint to exterior surfaces, filling any cracks or gaps with caulk is essential. Sealing them with a combination of caulk and paint prevents moisture from damaging the paint or decaying the underlying material. You want to ensure the caulk you purchase can be painted over or that you opt for a caulk the same color as the paint.

Steel and aluminum are two types of metal siding that are commonly used for residential and commercial buildings, but the materials have specific differences. Typically, steel is heavier and sturdier, fending off scratches and dents, while aluminum is lightweight and more prone to damage. Cost is another differentiating factor, as steel is more expensive than aluminum siding cost.

Concrete log siding can last several decades, from 30 to 50 years or more, as long as you keep up with proper maintenance. Luckily, concrete log siding is much lower maintenance than typical types of wood siding, so you’ll also have fewer expenses during that time. To keep your concrete log siding in good shape, you’ll simply need to reseal it every two to five years. Confirm with your manufacturer to determine how often to reseal.
