The residential roofing experts at Finished Touch Exteriors, Inc. can help you choose the "right roofing shingles" for your personal tastes, your roof style and all the technical requirements. Let us check it out now so you won't get an unwelcome surprise during the next rainstorm. Roofing shingles come in a variety of different designs, style and thickness, as well as many different roofing shingle materials. Older style asphalt roofing shingles were organic and did not last very long. While they are still available, we recommend a fiberglass roofing shingle saturated with asphalt which is used by 95% of the market to replace the older type of roofing shingles. These sturdy roofing shingles come in a wide variety of aesthetically pleasing designs and colors for your home or commercial property. Your roofs quality depends on several factors: type and quality of roofing shingles, manufacturer, attachment method, preparation work done prior to shingling, (overlaying old roofing shingles vs. old roofing shingles removed and replaced), life expectancy, color, cost, and warranty. Re-roofing with Finished Touch Exteriors, Inc. protects your home and possessions. A decade of helping people just like you is why we exist. Before you make this serious investment, you'll want to get answers to the following important questions: What does the manufacturer's guarantee really say? Has the contractor representative explained the re-roofing process to you, step-by-step, until you're satisfied you know exactly what will happen? Is the contractor licensed and bonded to work in your area? Whatever your roofing requirements are, Finished Touch Exteriors, Inc. can provide the quality workmanship, technical expertise and roofing shingles to give your roof a whole new life.

Skylights questions, answered by experts

Yes, permits are generally required when adding a skylight because the installation will alter the structure of your home's roof. The best time to add a skylight is when you're getting your roof replaced because your roofing contractor can work skylight holes into the design.

When planning out skylights and deciding how big they should be, it's important to look at the dimensions of the interior space. In addition to changing a room aesthetically, skylights influence the illumination and temperature of the space below. The U.S. Department of Energy recommends that a skylight’s size should never be more than 5% of the floor area in rooms with many windows.

The type of lighting you choose can have a big part in the aesthetic and function of your space. Ambient lighting refers to indirect or diffused lighting that evenly reaches most areas of the space. Task lighting illuminates specific areas, such as a workspace. Accent lighting draws attention to details in your home, and decorative lighting draws attention to itself.

Fixed skylights are by far the most popular type. Because skylights can be pretty high up on your ceiling, fixed (rather than operable) skylights remove some maintenance from the equation. Plus, you don’t have to constantly worry if you shut your skylight fully the last time you opened it or if you’re going to find a leak later on during a rainy day.

Yes, you can replace a skylight without changing the entire roof—if the roof is in good shape. First, you need to make sure the roof around the skylight is intact and free of damage. Quality installation is crucial to prevent leaks, including replacing the flashing, which seals the skylight to the roof. While replacing the skylight alone is doable, it can make sense to replace both at once to streamline the work, coordinate the warranties, and reduce the risk of future leaks. If you’re unsure, reach out to a professional for help in deciding the best approach.
