"Great experience! My skylight was leaking and Jeff was available the day I called to look at it and was able to provide me details on the work that was needed. The job was able to be completed a couple of days later and it looks fantastic now! Very trustworthy and thorough and I appreciated his sense of urgency to get my leaky skylight fixed before it rained again."

"I found John's service on Angie's list, called him and we spoke. We had to reschedule a few times due to weather and / or my schedule but he was very attentive and extremely easy to deal with. He came, cleaned all windows and screens inside and out, cleaned the skylights and we didn't even realize he was here. Great job highly recommend!

"Excellent craftsmanship, very responsive to our input, and great communication. Very willing to accommodate changes along the way. We uncovered a number of "old house surprises" in both projects and were offered multiple solutions at a range of prices for each, so we never felt forced into additional or unexpected charges."

Skylights questions, answered by experts

While it is possible to install a skylight as a DIY project, it is not recommended. Skylights are the most likely type of window to leak due to their position on the roof. Even minor mistakes during installation can lead to significant water damage and high repair costs. Additionally, working on a roof is dangerous, especially when maneuvering heavy, bulky windows. Due to the required roof modifications and the need for proper sealing and structural safety, hiring a professional skylight installer is strongly advised to avoid costly long-term issues.

Prevent future skylight issues by conducting regular inspections, ensuring gutters are clean to prevent water pooling, applying protective sealants periodically, and trimming overhanging branches that might cause physical damage to the skylight.

A skylight's ability to withstand hail depends on factors like material quality and thickness. Impact-resistant options, such as tempered or laminated glass, fare better against hail compared to standard glass. Proper installation and regular maintenance also contribute to their resilience. While smaller hailstones may not pose a significant threat, larger ones can cause damage. Consider skylight protection methods like covers or screens in hail-prone areas to enhance durability and minimize potential harm.

Yes, you can cover up a skylight if you no longer wish to have it in your space. There are a few options for covering up a skylight. One option is to install a skylight cover or shade that can be easily opened or closed as needed, allowing you to control the amount of light entering the room. Another option is to cover the skylight with a solid material, such as plywood or drywall, effectively sealing it off. However, when covering a skylight, it's essential to ensure proper insulation and waterproofing to prevent any issues in the future.

Fixed skylights are by far the most popular type. Because skylights can be pretty high up on your ceiling, fixed (rather than operable) skylights remove some maintenance from the equation. Plus, you don’t have to constantly worry if you shut your skylight fully the last time you opened it or if you’re going to find a leak later on during a rainy day.
