When threatened or crushed, stink bugs emit a pungent scent often described as smelling similar to cilantro. However, some people say it can smell like sulfur or ammonia. The scent is produced by a gland on their abdomen and some species can spray the scent too.

Termites are most active and cause the most damage during the spring and summer, as warm temperatures and increased moisture accelerate their activity. This is also when swarming typically occurs, allowing colonies to expand. However, termites remain active year-round, especially in warmer climates or heated homes. Once a colony is established, it can continue to damage wood 365 days a year, even during cold weather.

One of the most widespread chemicals used for killing termites is Fipronil. It’s one of the most common insecticides used by termite exterminators to kill termites fast. However, it’s toxic and generally used in outdoor areas only. Popular brand names of termite killers include Taurus, Bifen, Termidor, and BioAdvanced. All insecticides have pros and cons: Some are safer around humans but don’t last as long. Some may kill nearby plants or have power odors. Some are designed for safe indoor bait stations but take much longer to work.

Stay calm and avoid acting like a threat. Avoid swatting at the wasps or yelling, which will agitate wasps and make them more likely to attack. Instead, move away at a slow, steady pace in one direction, getting as much distance between you and the wasps as possible. 

Wasps swarm to protect their nest, so moving far away indicates you are not a threat and they should subside. Do not try to handle a wasp nest filled with agitated wasps. Wait until they call down before you take action, or trust in a professional.
