"Working with Ben at Creative Woodworking LLC was an absolute pleasure. Ben is not only a true craftsman but also someone who clearly enjoys what he does — and it shows in every detail of his work. The quality, creativity, and precision are top-notch. He took my ideas, added his own thoughtful suggestions, and delivered something even better than I imagined. Communication was easy, the process was smooth, and the end result is stunning. If you’re looking for beautifully crafted custom woodwork and a professional, I highly recommend Ben at Creative Woodworking LLC. You’ll love the experience (and the finished product)!"

"QUALITY work that was praised by not only us, but the other contractors that were hired to finish this project. Good communication and showed up on time to the agreed upon work days. I would hire Olson Construction again on any future projects! Thank you Mark!"

"If I had one word to describe Elegance Custom Cabinetry it would be "Outstanding". From the beginning, you could tell the passion, Dmitry (the owner) had in custom cabinetry. During the process of designing our new kitchen we went through 3 other cabinet makers and all either seemed to hate what they did or were non-responsive to our questions. Dmitry and his team were professional, friendly, prompt, dedicated, and perfectionists. In any project, you will have issues or unexpected challenges...Elegance ALWAYS had solutions and ALWAYS addressed them promptly. I am confident that without Elegance and Dmitry, our kitchen would have taken twice as long, for twice the cost, and with half of the result. I could not more highly recommend Elegance Cabinetry to anyone."

"Dustin Monahan was very efficient in both his work and in his analysis of the problems of the project. All of his recommendations were accepted. His price for the project was very fair. He was very clean and neat in his work. He contacted me every day and explained what he intended to accomplish on that day and worked according to schedule. He is very personable and I would highly recommend him. Would definitely use him again if needed."

"We feel VERY fortunate to have found Manuel. We had a leather sofa and loveseat which needed to be reupholstered and Manuel did an absolutely beautiful job. From helping us select the leather to delivering the final product, he was professional and easy to work with. He took a couple of pretty worn out pieces and made them better than new. His work is impeccable and he is so nice to work with. He does amazing work and we will use him again if we have another project, and we put him first on the list of upholsterers in the Twin Cities. Anyone with an upholstery job should be using Manuel without question."

Woodworking questions, answered by experts

There are two ways you can cut trim for doorways: with a miter saw or a table saw. Mitered joints need a 45-degree angle. If you’re unfamiliar with a miter saw, you might want to consider buying extra trim pieces or choosing butted joints instead. One wrong cut, and you’ll need to power up the saw again with a new piece.

Butted joints—also called shaker style—don’t need a 45-degree angle. Instead, your side pieces attach perpendicularly to the header trim and only require a straight cut.

The pro you need to hire to build your shed depends on the shed you purchase. A local handyman or general contractor can help build a prefab shed for you. However, if you’re looking for a custom shed, contacting a shed builder near you is the best option. Make sure you get quotes from 3 pros to decide on the best pro for your job.

Whether or not it’s easier to cut wood when it’s wet versus dry depends largely on the type of tool you use and the wood you’re cutting. For example, a chain saw should still be able to cut through wet wood with relative ease, but it may be more difficult to maneuver due to the wood fibers sticking to the chains of the saw.

However, you might want to avoid cutting wood entirely when it’s wet if you’re pruning your tree. Sawing a wet tree that you don’t plan on removing can also encourage bacterial and fungal growth and decay.

Most landscape timbers are 8 feet long, but some are also available in 10-foot and 12-foot lengths. Choose the length that will allow you to install landscape timbers using the least amount of cutting to fit. Shorter timbers will allow you to more easily create angles and shorter plant bed sides.

You don’t need a cutting board. In fact, cutting is the original purpose of butcher block countertops. That said, wood is porous and can harbor germs. You’ll need to clean your countertop thoroughly after use. Knives can also scratch the surface. This adds to the patina of the wood, but not everyone likes the look—in which case, you may want to use a cutting board.
