"Hedberg Aggregates has very poor customer service. I bought 2 x 5 lb bags of Techniseal Pro Series polymeric joint filler for $100 but I didn't need them. The bags have not been opened and are not damaged so thought I could return them, however, Hedberg Aggregates flatly refused to refund my money due to their “no return” policy. I asked whether they could make an exception since the bags were unopened and in perfect condition, the answer again was a flat no, they have a "no return" policy even for unopened items. I might understand if this was a load of sand or mulch, however, a “no return” policy for a packaged item that clearly has not been used is ridiculous. My experience with Hedberg Aggregates indicates the company has a severe lack of appreciation for their customers and very poor customer service, I will never recommend Hedberg Aggregates to anyone."

There should be a 1-inch thick layer of sand underneath your pavers in order to provide a proper base.

When laying gravel, it's often a good idea to apply a base layer, such as sand or crushed concrete. You may also want to layer a weed-blocking membrane on top of the base layer to prevent weeds and grass from sprouting up in your gravel driveway. Without the appropriate base layer, the gravel you lay may sink into the soil.

Replace organic mulch every one to two years, depending on the variety. Wood chips and straw, for example, will last a couple of years, while grass clippings and pine needles need replacing every several months. Inorganic mulch—such as rock and rubber chips—can stay in place for up to four years, depending on erosion and general garden upkeep. 

The best time to lay mulch depends on the type of mulch and the reason for installing it: 

  • Summer: Adding extra mulch helps soil retain moisture and keeps weeds at bay, allowing plants to thrive. 

  • Fall: Adding mulch helps control weeds and keeps soil and roots warm during the cooler months. Aim to add a layer of mulch 2 to 4 inches deep.

  • Winter: Mulch around perennial plants to help keep them insulated.

  • Spring: Wait until the ground has thawed. Depending on the thickness, add between 1 and 4 inches of mulch to provide freeze and rain protection and enrich the soil.
