That being said, the staff and management at Hedbergs does its upmost to make people feel like morons. The customer service has degraded from being so-so a few years ago to borderline abusive this last year, and I will no longer be using their services. Originally, I thought they just begrudgingly served homeowners / non-pros, but I have now gone to their yard with two different contractors for projects, and they treat them the same way!
While this attitude toward customers is never acceptable, it would be a little more tolerable if they handled their own work professionally. However, we had two instances where Hedbergs made mistakes and never showed any sign of apology. First, I was working with a contractor on an entryway project, and we needed cut stone. We found stone remnants in Hedberg's yard with great color and veining, and we met with the manager to get them cut. We needed them for the project and were quoted and quot;early next weekand quot; (4-5 days given the weekend). It took them a couple weeks to get those cut for us, setting the project back substantially. They didn't return our calls, and the foreman and manager we had spoken to were seemingly impossible to reach during that time. The product they gave us had none of the color or veining we were seeing on the remnants. I understand that this can happen with stone, but we had stood in front of those stones with both the foreman and manager showing them the exact piece we liked because of that color and veining. One would think that they would have made the first cut, realized that the stone looked completely different when cut, and given us a courtesy call. Instead of doing that, they continued cutting all of it, charged us for it, and refused to even discount it based on how late the completion was on the cuts.
The second (and final) issue I had came with a mulch delivery a few weeks later. I laid out tarps on the driveway for the mulch to be delivered on. The delivery truck arrived, and a guy got out to help the driver-in-training back into the driveway. He was coaching her on how far back to go before raising the bed and how to slowly drive forward to ease the mulch out of the truck in a nice pile. With both of us standing there, the new driver started releasing the mulch onto the center of the tarps, then began to drive forward with her wheels still turned. Realizing she was going the wrong way, she panicked and hit the gas, dumping a few cubic yards right on top of the perennial garden next to the driveway (missing the edge of the massive tarps by a good 10 feet). The guy standing there said, and quot;oh man, sorry, and quot; and he started to walk away. I asked if they could clean up their mess (not to mention the damage to the plants it buried), and he replied, and quot;no, we don't shovel. That's just how it goes sometimes with these loads.and quot; I realize that they can't always hit the tarps perfectly, but the tarps were three times the size of the mulch load, and they missed it by 10 feet because a trainee messed up. It's just another example of how little they care about their customers… As I worked quickly to uncover my garden that day, I vowed to never use them again. Enough is enough.
I encourage you to check out other places throughout the Twin Cities. You can find most of what they carry at other spots, and paying a little more is worth the customer service you will receive elsewhere. I truly hope Hedbergs replaces its management and hires on people willing to provide quality service to their customers.
