"Service was quick and great, will definitely recommend Nordeast Electric to friends and relatives. Would have been five stars but he was around 20 minutes late (which could be understandable because of traffic, weather, etc) and it would have been nice if he wore large boots/golashes over his shoes that can be taken off at the door so that snow and slush wouldn't be tracked into the house."

"My experience with Tom was nothing short of first rate: • He responded promptly, and was able to schedule me next day at a time that worked for me • He arrived when he said he would, evaluated my issues, and got to work right away • He explained what he was doing, what he found, and gave me invaluable advice and recommendations • His approach was professional and his work was top notch • Tom's prices were more than fair for all that he did • I should add that he didn't try to sell me on unnecessary work or add-ons University Electric was a lucky find. Tom's now my go-to-guy for any electrical work I need in my new home. If you're looking for quality work at a highly competitive price, and honest advice from a knowledgeable electrical professional, give Tom a try. You won't be disappointed."

Electrical questions, answered by experts

Natural gas and electricity rates vary significantly based on location, and pricing can change over time, too. It’s possible that in locations where natural gas is particularly inexpensive, it will cost less than grid-based electricity will. However, you should also factor in the generator’s initial costs and maintenance needs, as well as its noise level and if it can comfortably power all your home appliances.

Be careful not to drop your voltmeter or multimeter. Even a small fall can affect the tool’s ability to measure with accuracy. Always store your tools in their cases in a cool, dark place. Also, avoid touching the probes to each other while they’re connected to a circuit or another electrical component, and never tamper with anything inside the device.

Smart light switches are designed to work with most traditional light fixtures and wiring. However, there are several compatibility factors to consider. Some smart switches require a neutral wire to function, which may not be present in older homes (typically built before 1985). If you plan to use a dimming feature, ensure your LED bulbs are specifically the dimmable type. Additionally, a stable Wi-Fi connection is necessary for remote control, though some models may use other standards like ZigBee, which would require a compatible smart home hub.

A C-wire connects your thermostat to your household heating and cooling system to provide continuous 24V power. The furnace's transformer converts household electrical current into this low-voltage power to operate the HVAC system's circuitry. In most configurations, the C-wire connects to the terminals labeled "C" on both the furnace's low-voltage terminal block and the thermostat. In some cases, if a dedicated C terminal is unavailable, the C-wire can be connected to the "G" (fan) terminal at the furnace.

First, check the current electrical code in your area to ensure spaces you’re considering meet the requirements. After that, your outlet’s location is up to you. If you’re moving it to hide wiring, you may want to move it in a spot that will also be hidden from view, such as behind a media center or table. As long as you meet the spacing guidelines set by electrical codes, you should be able to pick any spot in your home for an outlet.
