"Excellent. Brandon was professional, he was prompt, did everything he promised to do, his rates were very reasonable, his painting skills are phenomenal, his cleanup was immaculate, and he went the extra mile doing additional things for me. I really honestly can’t say enough good things about his work and his professionalism. I highly recommend hiring him for any painting that you need done. I will most definitely hire him again."

"MJ is great to work with. We’ve hired her three separate times now, first she did the entire lower level of our house, then later stained and painted the entire exterior, then later came back for the whole main floor. We’d hire her again in a heartbeat. MJ is easy to communicate with and helpful picking paint colors, making suggestions, etc… She works quickly and cleans up after her projects well. Her pricing seems very reasonable compared to other painters we’ve worked with. Were happy to recommend MJ to anyone."

"Kevin and his team put forth a lot of effort to fit us in to their schedule before the cold set in; although we have only seen photos of the cabin, we are very pleased with the outcome and appreciate that they applied extra coats of semi-transparent stain to a newer addition that was a bit lighter. They also stained our deck at no extra charge as this was not a part of the original bid. Highly recommend this company!"

"All around, Marshall Handyman Services did a fine job with our fence. They were the least expensive out of all of the bids we received, and provided quality in service. One year later, the fence functions well and looks great."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

If you have a smooth, already bonded concrete surface, painting a concrete pool deck can be a great way to brighten up the area and add longevity. If the surface has another covering or a different type of paint has been used previously, you won’t be able to paint it without removing the existing coating. Wooden decks benefit from painting as it helps to keep them watertight. Quality pool deck paints also help make the surface less slippery and less likely to gather mold and mildew or prematurely crack.

For homes in areas with extreme weather, high heat, or intense sun exposure, high-quality acrylic paint is the best option. Acrylic paint is durable, resistant to both heat and cold, and provides a protective barrier with excellent UV resistance. For best results, look for acrylics that contain natural earth pigments, which are better suited for resisting sun damage. While oil-based paint is also durable, it can be prone to fading in high heat and can become too viscous to apply easily in cold temperatures. Additionally, choosing a neutral or light color like gray, beige, or white can help, as these colors absorb less heat than darker shades.

Ultimately, overapplication of stain can compromise the deck's appearance, durability, and longevity. It may result in an uneven finish, with excess stain pooling, dripping, or drying into thick patches. It can also obscure the wood's natural grain and texture, detracting from the desired aesthetic. Moreover, excessive staining may not fully penetrate the wood, leading to poor adhesion and premature wear. Additionally, thick layers of stain are prone to peeling, cracking, and blistering as they struggle to bond with the surface.

There are more pros than cons when staining a deck. Deck stain is more affordable than paint, it protects the wood and allows the natural textures to shine through, and it can revive the appearance of your home. However, deck stain also requires prep work (sometimes days or more), carries more upkeep than a painted deck, and can fade over time if not cared for.

Stain is meant to be absorbed by the porous wood, allowing some of the natural grain to show through. With that in mind, you don’t want to add more stain than the wood can absorb, as you risk covering up its natural markings. Generally, two coats is the maximum you should do, although very dense hardwoods may only be able to take a single coat.
