"Our home has unique textured finishes on the walls and ceilings. We sustained some water damage and had to replace a large section of the kitchen ceiling. We also had several ceiling and wall cracks that needed to be repaired. Garth did all of the plaster work and it matched the existing ceilings and walls perfectly. He also did a new rough plaster finish on our breezeway ceiling to match the adjoining office. He is very talented at what he does, and his pricing was very fair. My contractor warned me that I might not find someone who could do this type of plaster work these days. I was glad that I found Garth and proved him wrong. I recommend Garth without reservation. His work is beautiful."

"I wish I could give them more stars!!! Brad was super-friendly, super responsive, and super reasonably priced. More importantly, though, the knock-down ceiling repair was AWESOME!!!! He has freed me from the monkey on my back in home repairs - it looks so wonderful, can't hardly tell there was a repair even done, or that anyone was in my house!!! I highly recommend KMJ!!!!!!!"

Customers say: True professional

"Vasyl did a great job with the drywall in my shed that required lots of cuts to finish the wall around my workbench. I had him back to finish some projects in my basement as well. Oh i shouldnt forget the damage he repaired on two unrelated walls. Great work and great price! Arrived each day and finished each project on time and as promised."

"Erick was very professional and thorough. He evaluated what needed to be done, communicated clearly with us, and followed through on his plan. He also brought in a plumber to do additional work, saving us the hassle of finding one. Would strongly recommend Erick for drywall/plaster repairs, but he is probably capable of doing even more than that."

"Brennan was one of three bids I received. He was very competitively priced and he also was extremely responsive! He met me on our closing day (when it was somewhat chaotic) and his initial bid was very detailed. He stopped back at our house and adjusted numbers after we ended up uncovering some plaster issues in our closet. Brennan was able to fit our job in during a busy summer, even after I was delayed in getting back to him following the initial bid. The work was done quickly and VERY well! As an interior designer, I am very particular and have absolutely no hesitation recommending Brennan. I will be hiring him again for our future painting jobs! Old house homeowner tip: Brennan is extremely good at plaster work/repair and radiator painting! He repaired a large crack in our bedroom ceiling, fixed the walls in our closet after wallpaper removal revealed walls in BAD condition, and skim-coated walls and ceilings in our office to improve the overall texture. All areas look good as new with little to no signs of the previous issues. The radiators turned out great, as well!"

Plaster Repair questions, answered by experts

It is possible to apply plaster on the interior or exterior of your home, but we don’t recommend it. Plaster is easy to apply in theory, but in reality, it can be a challenging material to work with, and it’s difficult to get the finished product to look clean, even, and smooth. Many DIYers end up calling in a professional afterward to touch up the area or even redo it entirely because of mistakes they made in the process. Hiring a plaster pro will cost more, but it’s usually the best option to achieve high-quality results.

While it is possible to repair minor plaster cracks or holes yourself, it is generally not recommended for larger jobs or if you want a professional result. Plaster repair can be difficult in practice; proper wall preparation and achieving a smooth, seamless finish that blends with the existing wall requires experience, especially on textured surfaces. Hiring a professional ensures the repair will be durable and last longer, potentially saving you money over time. A pro can also determine if the cracks are from normal expansion or a more serious underlying issue.

Both plaster and drywall are durable wall finishes, but they differ significantly in installation, cost, performance, and aesthetics.

Installation & Cost: Drywall installation is faster and more affordable, typically costing $1.50 to $3 per square foot. It uses premade sheets, making it a more accessible DIY project. Plastering is a labor-intensive craft that requires specialized skills, pushing costs to $2 to $10 per square foot. It involves applying a wet paste over a lath framework.

Durability & Performance: Plaster is generally more durable, longer-lasting, and provides superior soundproofing. It is also a better insulator, which can help reduce energy costs. Drywall is easier to remove for future renovations.

Aesthetics: Drywall provides a smooth, uniform surface ready for paint or texture. Plaster offers a high-end, naturally textured look that can hide imperfections and is often preferred for achieving a classic or historic aesthetic.

Which is better? The choice depends on your priorities. Drywall is ideal for those prioritizing a lower upfront cost, faster installation, and DIY potential. Plaster is the better option for a higher-end project where durability, soundproofing, and a unique, premium finish are more important than the initial cost.

You can plaster over regular drywall, but it's essential to prepare the surface properly. Before plastering, the drywall should be clean, free of dust, and any loose or peeling paint should be removed. Applying a primer specifically designed for plastering can improve adhesion. Some professionals recommend applying a base coat of plaster or joint compound to create a better surface for the plaster to adhere to. Proper preparation ensures a smooth and durable plaster finish over regular drywall.

You can put certain types of plaster over other types, but doing so isn't always the best idea. For example, putting a coat of gypsum over lime plaster is possible, but doing so will limit the lime plaster's breathability and potentially affect its performance.

Since cement plaster tends to leave a textured surface, no matter how much you smooth it, some people prefer to use gypsum plaster as a topcoat over cement plaster, creating a smoother surface.
