"We hired Extraordinary Kitchens to remodel our kitchen at our home in Plymouth. Our installers (James and James) were fantastic! They texted me before arriving each day (on time), cleaned up every day and their attention to detail was great! There may be less costly options, but remember, you get what you pay for! If you want great work, fantastic people and fair pricing, don't overlook Extraordinary Kitchens. James (and James), thanks so very much!"

"We?re listing our house for sale soon and reached out to have some quotes for a full interior paint job. For us, Refresh had the best deal. They showed up and made quick work of our 2,700 square foot house. It took about 5 days. They work hard and fast but did a terrific job. I appreciate the care given to everything they moved and covered when painting. Nothing was damaged or broken, and we had a fair bit of clutter given the move. The painters were friendly, skilled and knowledgeable. By the end of the 1st day, they had new drywall up in a room we removed wainscoting from and peeled HALF the paper off of. Now it looks brand new. Will try to update the review with photos once we finish removing the clutter. Honestly was a great experience and we would recommend. Shoutout to Mario and Vinny for their patience dealing with my Dad over the phone and through me while he was out of state half the week."

"Pete, the owner of Tersigni and Sons Construction, provided exceptional craftsmanship and outstanding customer service throughout my project. If you want to skip the middleman, Tersigni and Sons is the way to go. Before I found Pete, I received 2-3 other quotes that were outrageous—more than I paid for my first home to finish my basement. These quotes came from large remodeling companies. I won’t name them, but a quick search for "large basement remodeling companies" will show you the top three. Pete's quote was about one-third the cost, and the quality remained top-notch. The key difference is that big companies often subcontract work, while Pete goes straight to the source. No one is perfect. Had a couple minor details along the way, but nothing unresolvable. For example, one wall needed another coat of paint, and Pete rolled it on himself. He manages multiple projects, so be patient, but he keeps you informed every step of the way. Overall, I give him a 4.8 out of 5—rounding up!"

Closets questions, answered by experts

If you’re on a tight budget, the least expensive material you can buy for DIY closet shelves is chipboard, a.k.a. particle board. This inexpensive material is made from a pulp of sawdust, resin, and glue that’s pressed together under high temperature and pressure. As you can imagine, it’s not very sturdy and might buckle under your blue jean collection, so you should only use it if you’re storing very light items.

Bump-out additions can add some space to a closet without requiring any significant structural work. This entails pushing back the existing rear or side of the closet, simply moving the wall into either an adjacent room or unused space. For ground-floor closets, this could even be extended to the exterior of the home, but that has its own complications. Bump-outs are a good discussion to have with your contractor if you’re just looking to increase the space a little—not renovate the entire closet space.

If you have a bathroom closet with movable shelves, you can place them at virtually any spacing that works for you. Useful measurements between shelves in the working, or middle, section can be 10 to 16 inches for towels or linens. Lower or higher shelving could be up to 24 inches between shelves to store lesser-used or bulky items or boxes.

Closet design services include help designing and laying out your closet for maximum utility, visual appeal, and return on investment. Many closet designers can also include the carpentry required to construct your custom closet. You should speak with your designer beforehand to determine what services are included in the estimate, and prepare to lay out additional funds for materials or labor as needed.

On average, building a custom or built-in closet costs around $2,100. However, the total price can range from as little as $500 for a simple DIY project to $6,000 or more for a large, high-end custom closet. Most projects typically fall between $1,500 and $5,000.

The final cost depends on several factors, including the closet's size, type, materials, and features. Here is a general cost breakdown by closet type:

  • Reach-in closet: $500 to $1,500

  • Walk-in closet: $750 to $5,000

  • Wardrobe: $2,000 to $6,000 or more

Choosing a prefabricated closet system is generally less expensive than a fully custom build. The scope of design and construction services will also significantly impact the price.
