When cleaning upholstery, you want to avoid harsh scrubbing, oversaturating the fabric, and using the wrong kind of cleaner for the fabric you’re cleaning. Any of these can cause significant damage to the upholstery, including rips, stains, faded fabric, mildew, or discoloration. Be methodical and use a light touch when cleaning upholstered furniture to preserve the life and look of the upholstery. 

The time it takes your couch to dry after cleaning will depend on several factors, such as fabric type, cleaning method, room temperature, and humidity. Dry time can be as little as one hour or as long as 24 hours. You can shorten drying time by using a fan, opening a window, or using a dehumidifier. Just make sure not to sit on your couch until it’s completely dry, otherwise it may become moldy or leave an odor.

You’ve tackled the pee stain on the carpet, but that smell still lingers in the air. Yuck! Fortunately, you can use certain sprays to help remove the odor. A homemade baking soda spray, made with 1/4 cup of baking soda and 2 cups of water in a spray bottle, can help remove the smell of pee. You can also use an enzymatic cleaner directly on the pee stain to deodorize it.

Vinegar is acidic and makes a great cleaning agent for many items throughout the house, including some upholstery. It should not be used for any upholstery with the code S or X. It can be used for W labels. To use a vinegar solution, mix equal parts water and vinegar and blot the stain using a gentle circular motion with a clean microfibre cloth and then allow to dry completely. As with any DIY solution, test a small and inconspicuous section first.

The length of time you have to stay off your couch after cleaning depends on the fabric type and the level of sanitation. Always let your couch fully dry out before anyone sits on it. This can take a few minutes after wiping a leather sofa to a day after deep cleaning fabric. A damp sofa equals damp clothes, and trapped moisture contributes to mold and mildew formation and discoloration. You can speed drying by directing fans towards the sofa, soaking up excess moisture, and keeping the room well-ventilated.
