You will need a permit for any electrical work that involves installing or replacing wiring, moving or installing new fixtures, switches, or outlets, hardwiring appliances or HVAC equipment, installing subpanels, and upgrading electrical service. You typically don’t need a permit to have an electrician replace an existing light fixture or electrical box. You can always call your local building department to see if your project needs a permit, but a professional electrician will be able to tell you. In most cases, your professional will pull the permits for you.

The most common type of electrical outlet is a 3-prong outlet, which has two flat blades (one is wider than the other) and a round grounding pin. Older homes typically have 2-prong outlets that aren’t as safe as more modern options and are generally not up to current electrical codes.  Other outlets you can find in your home include 20A, 125 volt varieties for larger appliances like refrigerators or washing machines. 

There are also GFCI outlets, which protect against electrical shock in wet areas, such as bathrooms and kitchens, and arc fault circuit interrupter (AFCI) outlets, which protect against electrical fires caused by arcing.

You should not attempt to disable a smoke alarm unless you’ve already activated a replacement unit. To stop a hardwired smoke alarm from beeping, reset the device or silence the alarm. If you’re removing a hardwired alarm, shut off the power, turn the unit counterclockwise to remove it from the ceiling, and disconnect the wiring.

Unfortunately, aluminum wiring can overheat, leading to failing connections, splices, and even house fires. If your home has aluminum wiring, hire a local electrician to conduct a thorough inspection. While the safest option is to replace everything with copper wire, that can be very expensive. In some cases, your pro will be able to pigtail the connections by adding a short section of copper wire to each end of the aluminum wire. This is more budget friendly, but is only appropriate for certain homes.

The National Electric Code states that outlets should not be spaced more than 12 feet apart, and there should be an outlet placed every 6 feet at the floor line in areas designated as living spaces. Most homes in the United States have 75 outlets, but it will depend on the amount you need based on your home's size and your needs.
