A fireplace hearth is a fireproof flooring material that extends out from the base of the fireplace and into the room. Hearths can be made of brick, ceramic, marble, limestone, and more. A hearth serves the purpose of decreasing the fire risk in the area directly around the fireplace. If flying embers hit carpet or wood, they’ll spark and create a fire. But if they hit something like tile or granite, they’ll simply go out.

The primary disadvantage of a ventless fireplace is that it doesn’t have an exterior venting system. This means that the byproducts from combustion are emitted into your home, which raises some safety concerns. In addition, ventless gas fireplaces produce moisture as they burn—and if there’s no ventilation, you could end up with a mold problem.

Some types of electric fireplaces use more electricity than others. Models that produce 1,500 watts will have more of an effect on your heating bill than 750-watt models. 

Electric fireplaces use an average of $1.85 of electricity every eight hours. These minimal operational costs aren’t likely to make a big difference in your electric bill—unless you’re using it as a primary heating source for your home and it’s running most of the time.

The cost to replace a chimney is about $10,000 on average and can cost up to $15,000, depending on the size, accessibility, materials, and extent of the replacement. Sometimes tearing the chimney down to the roof line and rebuilding it is an option. But if the chimney's internal structure deteriorates badly enough, a complete demolition down to the fireplace or the foundation may be necessary.
