"Irish replaced vinyl siding, soffit, fascia and rain gutters on my home, including installation of hand-laid stone veneer on two exterior walls. They also replaced roofs for two sheds. Workmanship was excellent, price was very compeititive, communication was good. The project was completed on time and on budget, with very little correction/re-work involved. Very friendly and professional. The result was an astounding transformation of the home. I highly recommend this company!"

"It isn't done yet, but the construction manager is not being cooperative about some details that are very important to us. His comments on the material and timing for staining the deck are not consistent with information from lumber experts I know."

"We had storm damaged aluminum siding replaced with vinyl siding. This was done during January and we were cautioned that work would be performed weather permitting. Of course, all of the snow and rain arrived and it took longer than expected to be done. However, the work was top notch and workers extremely courteous and aware of maintaining a clean working area. Once the weather cleared the work was completed in a matter of days and upon inspection everything was done met our expectation. Very favorable follow through my management and workers. Highly satisfied and enthusiastically recommend them."

"Based on the reviews on Angie's List, I gave Legacy a call to inspect and provide an estimate on a leak near our gas chimney. This was the third call to a Grand Rapids-area roofing company to help with this issue and Legacy was the most receptive and energetic company to call - it sounded like they were happy to help resolve our leakage. Making an appointment was easy and conducive to our schedule. Jeremy came out, spent some time looking at the roof and was very meticulous going over the proposal. The work was carried out a few days later. The repairs were done quickly and effectively. The true test came last week when Michigan endured torrential downpours. I am pleased to report that the repairs help up in the most important time, and the interior of our house remained drip-free. Needless to say, we are happy we went with Legacy. I would recommend Legacy and utilize their services again, if needed."

"Family. That's how the team at Legacy roofing & restorations treated us. Right from the start, when Brandon gave us the quote, I knew we picked the right team. Never any pressure to "do it now"! He was always careful to be sure we got the best quality products for our budget. and the price was perfect. Our roof looks great ( the house was built in 1928 )! They will be here again in October to do our siding.....I can't wait! I highly recommend Legacy for your next project!"

"Had a very good experience with Legend Roofing (in West Michigan). Doug Walker was a very communicative salesperson and easy to get a hold of. We had a complex roof with many angles and steep pitches. Legend came in at the low end of the quotes I received for the same service and materials. The crew was outstanding, working thoroughly through two hot days. They did a good job on clean-up as well. I highly recommend getting a quote from Legend."

Siding questions, answered by experts

Hardie board is more expensive than vinyl siding. Vinyl siding costs $3 to $12 per square foot, on average, with cost skewing toward the lower end of that range. Hardie board siding costs $7 to $18 per square foot, depending on the style, color, and trim. However, it lasts twice as long and often looks nicer, meaning you’ll see a higher bump in your home value and greater curb appeal from Hardie board.

Fiber cement siding is the best siding to install over stucco because it offers many of the same benefits for homes where stucco is common, including fire resistance, insect resistance, and good insulation. Fiber cement siding is also rigid, so it won’t warp over time like vinyl siding might if installed over furring strips.

Stucco is considered a type of cladding because it includes a built-in ventilation layer, a weatherproof membrane beneath that, and, often, a layer of insulation to improve building efficiency. The multiple layers of stucco—the scratch coat, the brown coat, and the finish coat—also create a more complex building membrane, so it’s more accurate to call it cladding. However, homeowners and contractors alike refer to stucco as siding.

Before applying paint to exterior surfaces, filling any cracks or gaps with caulk is essential. Sealing them with a combination of caulk and paint prevents moisture from damaging the paint or decaying the underlying material. You want to ensure the caulk you purchase can be painted over or that you opt for a caulk the same color as the paint.

There should be small gaps between your roof and the walls of your home, and other buildings. These small gaps let building materials shift, expand, and contract with weather and other outside forces, and they prevent moisture from wicking down walls from roofing and gutter systems. Without these strategic gaps, your home’s exterior and its finishes can sustain water damage, decay, peel, delaminate, and crack. However, there is a fine line between a smart gap and a problematic gap—all  gaps should be small, intentional, and covered or filled in with foam insulation to prevent pests from using them as access points.
