"Fantastic. Great job. On time. Did lots of extras at no extra charge. Would highly recommend him. Plan on using him again in the spring to resurface both decks and build us a new shed. Also more painting on the interior."

"Could not have gone better. Shawn is not only one of the best but he is honest, forthright and an absolute pleasure to work with. In addition he offered great ideas that were thoughtfully executed and always happy and upbeat. He is a talented woodworker, is fairly priced and perhaps in my 34 years of renovating over 50 vintage houses in Seattle, WA and Palm Springs, CA, is one of my favorites. He's the kind of guy you not only trust with your key, but the kind of guy you'd enjoy having a beer with as well. When he completed most of the work, we were kind of sad not to have him around for the next couple of weeks. A+++++ all the way around."

Cabinet Refacing and Refinishing questions, answered by experts

Small to medium-sized cabinetry typically takes three to five days, whereas large cabinetry takes around seven days. The complete process includes:

  • Removing cabinet doors, drawers, and hardware.

  • Removing the existing stain or paint.

  • Sanding cabinet frames, doors, and drawers.

  • Staining each side of the cabinetry one at a time. You’ll have to wait for the first side to dry before staining the other side.

  • Waiting for the doors, drawers, and frames to dry fully.

  • Reattaching hardware and hinges.

  • Putting the doors and drawers back on the cabinet boxes.

Clean regularly, avoid harsh chemicals, and address scratches or dents promptly to preserve their appearance.

You can paint over wood, wood-laminate, and metal cabinets, but you need to prepare the surface first. Plastic laminate cabinets and thin veneers may accept a layer of paint depending on their condition, but they require special techniques and paints. If your cabinets sag or have significant damage, it may be a better investment to replace your cabinets than paint over them.

To achieve a smooth, even finish that’s free of brush strokes, spray painting is the way to go. However, it tends to use up more paint due to overspray and can have a learning curve before you perfect your technique. This isn’t to say that a brush or roller isn’t also an excellent tool, so you should test out each technique on a piece of cardboard or spare piece of wood beforehand to see which one gives you your desired look.

Yes, sanding cabinets before you stain them helps the new stain better adhere to the surface. If you’re adding a darker stain to previously stained wood, you only have to sand them lightly enough to remove any finish and rough up the wood to improve adhesion. On the other hand, if you’re trying to stain wood that is a darker color or that has paint on it, you need to sand down to the original wood, or the color will show through the new stain.
