"My cedar deck was in need of repair. There were several boards that were cracking and rotting. In addition, the handrail and steps leading from my backyard up to the deck were loose and rotting. I also needed power washing and re-staining. From the initial meeting through the final inspection, the process went very smoothly. Their pricing was reasonable. Most importantly, they started and completed the job on time and the quality of the work was excellent. I would highly recommend Woodbrook Painting!"

"The guys were Great! Very courteous and professional. They did a great job! They used a high quality paint and did not get any paint on the brick. House looks like new! I will be using them for two more projects (deck and barn) before winter. Highly recommend LIEDEL’s for painting and power washing."

"I hired Valentino to repair some of my exterior trim and paint my house and couldn't be happier with the result. As the project progressed, I found myself finding adding other projects that he was easily able to add to overall work. I found Valentino's original quote to be very competitive, and the add-on projects were also quite reasonable. Valentino was my first call when I needed additional repair work done on my house!"

"I have a very complicated job with four different colors and many sharp angles and high ceilings. I also wanted all my trim board painted and doors painted. They also refinished my front door and fixed areas outside the house. They were very pleasant, attentive to my needs, and did a fabulous job!"

"From the first contact through Angi, and along every step of the process, this company was exceptional. Tony did a wonderful job staining my deck in two colors and balcony in one color. Communication with Tuvia was very easy and exceptionally professional. They were the highest bidder and worthy of the investment. I highly recommend them and will use them for any future painting project."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Yes, you must thoroughly clean your deck before staining. If you don't, dirt, debris, grease, and mildew can get trapped between the wood and the new stain. This not only looks unsightly but also prevents the stain from penetrating the wood properly, reducing its ability to protect the deck from weather and UV rays. As a result, the stain won't last as long or look as good. Any existing mold or mildew left untreated can continue to grow beneath the new stain, potentially leading to wood rot and structural damage. Always wait at least 48 hours after cleaning for the wood to dry completely before applying stain.

The best type of paint for concrete exterior surfaces like concrete porches, steps, or walkways is high-quality exterior-grade paint with strong weather resistance. Acrylic latex blends with tiny anti-slip particles will help create an anti-slip coating for your concrete porch. This type of paint will stand up best to the elements, especially rain, snow, and ice. An exterior epoxy will also help strengthen your concrete porch.

Limewash and whitewash are two techniques used to give brick a light, matte finish, but they differ in composition, application, and permanence. The best choice depends on your aesthetic goals and the specific surface.

Composition

  • Limewash: A natural and environmentally friendly option made from limestone, water, and sometimes pigments. It is breathable and soaks into porous surfaces like brick.

  • Whitewash: Traditionally made from lime, water, chalk, and binders, but a similar look can be achieved with watered-down white paint. It is paint-based and sits on top of the surface.

Appearance and Finish

  • Limewash: Provides a natural, textured appearance that allows the brick's character to show through. It offers a more traditional finish.

  • Whitewash: Creates a softer, more opaque finish, often used for a rustic or shabby-chic style.

Application and Permanence

  • Limewash: Is semi-permanent and can be removed, making it a good choice if you might want to change the look in the future. It requires more skill to apply and cannot be used on previously painted brick.

  • Whitewash: Is a more permanent solution. It is more forgiving to apply and can be used on painted brick. However, because it sits on the surface, it can trap moisture.

Ultimately, if you want a breathable, natural, and reversible finish for unpainted brick, limewash is a great option. If you need a more permanent, opaque coating that can be applied over painted surfaces, whitewash is the better choice. Whitewashing may also be more economical, costing approximately $1.40 to $4.20 per square foot.

It’s best to use an exterior latex acrylic paint to promote maximum adhesion to composite decking. This flexible paint type can better cope with the natural expansion and contraction that can occur with composite deck boards. Oil-based paints won’t adhere as effectively and are more likely to crack and peel as the boards flex. Testing whether your chosen paint will stick on an inconspicuous section or a spare board is a good idea.

It is definitely worth sanding a deck to ensure the wood absorbs new stain. Sanding a deck removes the outer layers of aging wood, allowing the stain to penetrate. It also gives a fresh look to the entire surface as part of the deck refinishing process. Without sanding, your stain or sealant is less likely to absorb into the wood. While sanding a deck is a time-intensive project, the rewards are noticeable and long-lasting.
