Depending on how much adhesive was used as well as the strength of the adhesive, you may have some drywall damage when removing a mirror. You can typically repair most drywall damage if it’s small by sanding the damaged area, applying spackle to smooth the damaged section so it’s flush with the rest of the wall, and repainting the area.

If the water damage is small, such as small patches, you can paint over the area. To prevent mold growth, roll on a coat of an antifungal primer beforehand painting. There are several warning signs that a ceiling crack is connected to a larger issue. For starters, if the crack is wider than 1/8 inch or longer than 12 inches, you might have a more serious problem. The same applies if you have multiple smaller cracks or cracks going across the ceiling and down the wall. In any of these situations, you should ask a professional to assess the damage.

Painting or plastering over water-damaged wall plaster is only a temporary fix and doesn’t fix the real problem. If you must, wait until the surface is completely dry before applying a new layer. However, we recommend you remove the damaged plaster and properly perform a repair or hire a professional to do it. Water damage repair is normally covered by your home insurance.

Skimming is covering drywall with a layer of drywall compound after installation or to smooth old walls. Plastering is covering walls with a mixture of gypsum or lime, cement or sand, and water. Plastering is more costly and labor-intensive than skim coating. Some homeowners and professionals refer to skim coating as plastering, even though the material spread over the wall is totally different.
