"Lower Peninsula Sealcoating did a great job on my 2100 sq ft driveway. Communication was good as they kept me informed of the process and arrived at the agreed upon time. The job included repairing a pot hole as well as filling cracks and sealcoating. Throughout, they were efficient, professional and pleasant. The price was fair and representative of similar quotes from other companies. I will hire again them in future as the need arises."

"Tearing out the garage required cutting the floor along the wall - this was done without issue. Floor itself was demo'd and scrap removed. First section of driveway was also replaced to ensure water flow was correct. Floor looked great once they were done. Would use again if/when the rest of the driveway is replaced."

"Brian was very nice, said he'd do the job mid April, called in March and said he could come that day due to a cancelation and we were thrilled. Took about 5 hours, and now we can use our driveway again. Very professional, fast, thorough and quality of work is very good. Would hire him again."

"Both finished walkways are beautiful, especially the back walkway in particular. We have been living with it and thinking it was as good as it could get. But when Tom finished, it's like a work of art. Great job!"

Asphalt Driveways questions, answered by experts

Wet cutting is usually the preferred method. It controls dust, which helps protect your lungs and makes for a cleaner working environment. Plus, the water cools the blade, preventing overheating and prolonging its life while providing smoother, more precise cuts. The downside is the mess—water and asphalt sludge can be messy to clean. Dry cutting, though convenient if water isn’t available, creates a lot of dust, which can be harmful. This also increases the risk of blade damage due to overheating. So, if you have the option, wet cutting is the better method for most asphalt jobs.

This creates a risk for your driveway to fail after asphalt curing because it doesn't have a lasting bond with the surface. In order to get asphalt to perform as intended, it's necessary to prepare the dirt surface correctly first. The loose soil base under the new driveway must be compacted until it is stable enough to support the weight of the asphalt.

The material that’s best for your private road depends on your property, the climate in your area, and your personal preferences. Gravel is an affordable option, but some homeowners don’t like how it looks. It can be a pain to remove snow from, and it requires more ongoing maintenance than asphalt or concrete. However, while these other options require less maintenance and make snow removal a breeze, they’re more expensive and will need repairs from time to time. Ultimately, you’ll have to choose the road material that suits you and your property best.

At a depth of two inches, a ton of asphalt covers around 80 to 100 square feet. However, the thicker the asphalt, the less surface area it will cover. That’s why measuring correctly is essential when estimating asphalt needs and costs to ensure you get enough material to cover your entire driveway, patio, or other asphalt surface.

A solid driveway starts with the right asphalt mix, and for most homes, dense-graded hot mix asphalt (HMA) is the most recommended. It’s both durable and flexible, making it a reliable choice for residential use. A properly compacted 2-3 inch layer on a well-prepared crushed stone base will hold up for years. In areas with harsh winters or scorching summers, a slightly modified mix can help prevent cracking and rutting. No matter the climate, quality installation is just as important as the material itself, so hiring an experienced contractor ensures a smooth, long-lasting driveway built to last.
