When it comes to window coverings, cellular shades are typically known as the most energy-efficient option. Cellular shades are also known as honeycomb shades. They are made of a soft fabric and take the form of “honeycomb” cells. These cell pockets trap air in and around your windows, providing insulation.

If your window film doesn’t come with an installation kit and its own application solution, you can make your own—but don’t use soap! Instead, use 1 teaspoon of baby shampoo mixed with a gallon of bottled water. Make sure the bucket in which you mix this solution is completely clean.

Home window tinting costs around $600 on average, and most homeowners pay between $150 and $1,600 for the service, depending on a few different factors. The number of windows you want tinted and the size of those windows are the most significant cost factors, as each window and each additional square foot of tint will add to your total. The quality of the tint itself is another important cost factor to consider, as additional coatings like low-emissivity (low-E) treatment will increase the cost of the materials.

To darken your windows without curtains, try installing window film or even installing an awning outside your windows. Window film is a DIY-friendly option with many different darkness levels you can choose from to fit your desired look. Awnings can also help by casting shade over your window, though this isn’t feasible for every home. 

Some frosted glass sprays can handle the outdoors, but most of them aren't built for it. Sprays made for exterior use will say so clearly on the label. Anything marked “interior use only” can't hold up against rain, UV exposure, or changing temperatures without peeling, fading, or yellowing. Outdoor-rated sprays are typically more durable, but even then, proper prep and application matter. Before spraying anything outside, double-check the product instructions. If it doesn’t specifically mention exterior use, skip it.
