"The mark of a good service company is the lack of need to take on an additional project (clean up) after the project is completed. This is definitely the case with CJW Chimney Sweep! Greg and Will placed runners all the way from the front door to the fireplace completely covering the tile and wood floor that was trafficked. In addition the entire fireplace hearth was covered. After their efficient professional work, there was NOTHING left to clean up. This is very highly appreciated which is exactly why we are repeat customers."

"

This was a big deal purchase. It worked out for me good and bad, The cleaning of the chimney was fine, but the fireplace has two sides. We talked about putting a door on one of the sides that matched the other side. That was not part of the deal, that was separate. I gave them a good down payment and no door is forthcoming. They are very nice, but no door has been forthcoming. They were going to bring the door two weeks ago, but I got a call from the guy who said he was stuck on the side of the road and could not come that day. I have not heard from them since.

"I was impressed with Chuck from Shamrock Chimney. He was realistic in his discussion and went thru various options from converting to a gas fireplace to wood inserts. He discussed the issues with the existing field stone face and converting to a two way fireplace. He certainly made me comfortable to consider Shamrock should the project move forward."

"I needed the top part of my chimney replaced and some other tuckpointing and brick replacment done around my house. Jason set up a time to come and check out what needed to be done, he arrived on time, he explained things very thoroughly, and I had the estimate by the end of the day. He answered all of my questions quickly and thoroughly - very good communication. The day of the job, they showed up right on time, they did everything I asked for (and a little bit more), they did a great job, and cleaned everything up very nicely. I would definitely recommend them to friends and if I ever need any brickwork done again, I would definitely contact them. Thank you!"

Fireplaces questions, answered by experts

Common problems include pilot light failure, clogged burners, and faulty ignition systems. Regular maintenance prevents many issues.

Hardwoods such as oak, maple, and hickory are the best types of wood to burn in a wood stove. These woods burn hotter and longer than softwoods, producing less creosote and fewer emissions. Hardwoods provide a more efficient and cleaner burn, which helps maintain better air quality and reduces the frequency of cleaning and maintenance required for your stove.

Yes, you should seal and cap an unused chimney to protect it from damage. Sealing the structure helps prevent moisture damage, which can lead to issues like cracks, spalling, efflorescence, and damaged mortar joints. Capping the chimney is also crucial to prevent blockages, damage from invasive critters, and downdrafts, while still allowing for proper air ventilation to manage moisture. For the best results, consult a chimney professional to select the right type of chimney or flue cap for your home. It's also wise to continue with annual chimney inspections to maintain the structure's integrity.

Regular inspections, using dry wood, and installing chimney caps help maintain efficiency and safety.

If your gas fireplace is vented through a chimney, a chimney cap is highly recommended. While not all gas fireplaces require a traditional chimney, for those that use one, a cap provides several key benefits. It prevents rain, debris, and animals from entering the chimney, which can cause blockages or damage. A cap also helps prevent downdrafts that could push harmful gases like carbon monoxide back into your home. When installing a cap, ensure it is appropriate for a gas fireplace and does not restrict proper ventilation.
