"David and his team did a great job with my drywall repair project. After the drywall on the ceiling in my bedroom began to come down because the glue that was used to bond the finish layer to the sub-layer was only rated to hold for 25 years, I ripped it all down, but while doing this it damaged the drywall on the walls near the ceiling, so I cut out a section of the damaged drywall a foot down from the ceiling all the way around the room. after installing the new drywall on the ceiling myself, David butt seamed in new drywall in that section at the top of the walls so that I would not have to rip it all down from the walls and start over. He did an excellent job floating it all out so that you cannot see where the seam is. I'm not a professional drywaller myself, but I know it takes patience and skill to do this and make it look good. He came out to my place as promised when we set appointments, and he started on the day he promised, coming back every day until the job was finished. Overall I would say he did a great job and it was a good value for the money. I plan to hire him again on a future bathroom remodel project. Thanks David! Rob - Saginaw Mi. October 11th, 2023"

Drywall questions, answered by experts

If your home was built before the 1940s and was not remodeled in the past 50 or so years, you probably have plaster walls. Aside from assuming, there are some practical ways to tell if you have plaster walls, including the following: If you knock on the wall and it feels solid, not hollow, if you can’t insert a thumbtack easily, if there are cracks that look like spiderwebs, or if your home has curved, arched, or swirled walls, doorways, or window openings.

If you have an unfinished basement or attic, you could examine the backs of any finished walls to check, too.

When choosing materials for finishing basement walls, consider factors such as moisture resistance, durability, and fire resistance. Opt for materials specifically designed for basement environments, like moisture-resistant drywall or cement board. Insulation with vapor barriers can help regulate temperature and prevent condensation. Consider using mold-resistant paints or coatings.

Research and consult with experts to select materials that are suitable for your specific basement conditions and intended use. Prioritize quality and compatibility to achieve long-lasting and aesthetically pleasing results.

On average, drywall installation costs around $2,000, with a typical range of $400 to $6,000, including materials and labor. The final price depends on several factors. The most significant is the size of the area, as many contractors charge per square foot. Other cost factors include the complexity of the job (e.g., cutting around multiple windows and doors, corners, or curved walls), accessibility, location, the thickness of the drywall, the height of the room, and the desired level of finish. The level of finish can range from simply hanging the drywall to taping and mudding the seams and painting the walls.

If you only have tiny holes in your drywall (for example, dents or nail marks), you probably won’t need a patch kit. Instead, you can plug the hole with a small amount of spackle. Once the spackle dries, you can sand the area and paint over it—just like you would in the steps outlined above.

Yes, wainscoting is installed directly over drywall. However, ensure the drywall is in good shape since it will support the wainscoting. If the drywall has issues, such as holes, mold, or mildew, repair them before installing the wainscoting. Alternatively, you can install a plywood substrate before attaching the trim.
