There are several pros and cons to brick houses, including the fact that painted brick requires more maintenance than bare brick. For one, you need to repaint the surface every 10 or so years. This is a costly and time-consuming process that requires sanding, scraping, washing, and a new coat of paint. You also need to touch up the paint if it chips or fades. You don’t have to sand between primer coats. However, if you’d like, you may lightly sand your last coat to ensure a smooth surface before you apply the paint color.

You can paint over existing wallpaper if you select wallpaper that is designed to be paintable. This type of paper is meant to add texture to walls. Afterward, you can simply prime and redo your walls with interior paint, and no one will know the difference.

Many people choose to paint the walls first for a few reasons. First, it can provide a sense of accomplishment and motivation to tackle the rest of the room. Second, starting with the walls allows for more forgiveness of small mistakes. You can paint right up to the edge of the trim and easily cover up any accidental paint drops later. On the other hand, if you start with the trim, you need to be more precise to avoid any splatters on the walls.
