"Originally we had thought there would be no excavation, just a concrete floor. When we probed the possibility of an excavation that would involve removing about 1800 cubic feet of dirt, Greg Mitchell said that they had not done a job this large and he had to think it through. He came to our house and we discussed multiple ways of removing the dirt, considering time, cost-effectiveness, and keeping the house clean. Greg was quite easy to talk to. One of the options discussed was a conveyor belt through a window-well, another was dump trucks in the back yard, but ultimately the solution that made the most sense was to dig down outside the front of the house, cut a temporary hole in the foundation, shovel the dirt onto a conveyor belt that would extend from the crawl space and connect with a second conveyor belt that took the dirt into a dumpster. Once the job started, it was realized that this was not fast enough and multiple conveyor belts inside the crawl space were utilized so that dirt would only have to be handled once. Some of the dirt was too hard to excavate using hand shovels, so power chisels were used. Removing the dirt was over the half the cost of the entire operation. The workers seemed to take pride in their work. Greg was prepared to do a spray fire-proofing but we decided to do wallboard. We also added the steel trowel finish. We feel that he handled this and other slight changes nicely as the job progressed, and the final cost to us was very fair."

Excavating questions, answered by experts

Whether you grind or dig up and remove your tree stump depends on your landscaping goals. Using a stump grinder leaves the root system in place for it to decompose over time, whereas digging up the tree stump removes the roots and the stump. Overall, stump grinding is a far simpler process since you won’t need to deal with the roots. Stump removal will make your yard look like a demolition site, but you’ll have an easier time replanting in the same place as your former tree.

Some two-in-one tools and machines do both jobs, and those could be the right solution for smaller residential projects. However, the phrase “use the right tool for the job” definitely applies to digging. For the best results, get two separate tools for your trenching and landscape edging projects or call a pro to take care of everything for you.

Landscape edging is more DIYable than trenching. You can DIY your own digging projects, but proceed carefully and only with proper knowledge of the equipment and appropriate safety measures in place. Keep in mind the project's scope and estimate how long it will take you to do it on your own. While you can certainly save money by DIYing home improvement projects, you can’t exactly hide an unfinished—or worse, ruined— landscaping job from the neighbors. It’s always safer to call an excavation pro near you to get an estimate.

The cost to repair a crawl space runs between $1,500 and $15,000, depending on the extent of the damage. Major flooding or water repairs can cost up to $10,000 for removal and repairs. If you simply need to clean your crawl space, expect to pay between $2,000 and $6,000 for a major cleanout. Replacing a crawl space beam due to rot or damage can cost between $1,500 and $5,000, while removing and replacing damaged insulation costs between $1,000 and $4,000.

The best way to protect tree roots is to avoid the roots entirely by excavating outside the root radius of the tree. For nearby projects, it’s a good idea to construct a temporary retaining wall. But that’s not always possible, depending on the project and the root system. In these cases, consider using alternative equipment like an auger to tunnel under the ground.

Remember, tree roots can damage nearby cement foundations as they grow. If a tree is close enough to interfere with large excavations, it may be better to remove the tree than risk future problems.
