If your septic tank is still within its expected lifespan and you need to relocate it on your property, it's possible to do so. However, because the task is so labor-intensive and costly, most homeowners simply choose to abandon the old tank if possible and install a new system in the new location. In either case, hiring a professional installation company will be necessary for the job. 

The depth of your septic tank has nothing to do with its size. In fact, some septic tanks can even be installed above-ground! Like other sizes, a 1,000-gallon septic tank could be buried as shallow as 4 inches below the ground or as deep as 4 feet. It all depends on your specific property.

Although cesspits may be necessary depending on your main sewage system access or nearby soil quality, they carry a few drawbacks. Cesspools require regular emptying and have relatively high maintenance and pumping costs. Certain areas also disallow the use of cesspools and may require you to cover the cost of existing cesspools to be converted into septic tanks.

Septic drain lines (or leach lines) are typically buried between 18 and 36 inches underground, and should be at least 6 inches below the surface. These pipes are perforated and surrounded by filtering materials like sand or gravel. Burying the lines at this depth helps minimize odors and allows bacteria and other biological processes in the soil to effectively treat the wastewater. Burying lines too close to the surface can cause issues unless the soil is very compact and stable.

Your septic tank naturally contains the good bacteria it needs, so you typically don't have to add more as the system produces them on its own. However, if you wish to replenish the bacteria, you can use natural methods. For example, you can add three rotten tomatoes to your garbage disposal or flush 1/4 ounce of active yeast down the toilet every three months. While store-bought septic enzymes and chemicals are available, many additives are unnecessary and may even harm your system. The most effective way to maintain a healthy bacterial balance is to avoid using chemical drain cleaners, which can kill the beneficial bacteria in your tank.
