"Johnny’s Tree Service showed good communication, willingness to do the job to my satisfaction and gave me a price break. I also hired them to remove some shrub trunks from my neighbor’s front yard on my dime. They removed some 16 huge arborvitaes, ground the stumps, filled in and leveled the ground and applied grass seed and straw. 9 days after completion, the grass seed is sprouting and I’m pleased that Johnnys could do the entire job for me. "To start with, it was nice to have someone come to give me an estimate that knew about trees. Terry was very knowledgeable and honest with me. I have a large elderberry, I Wanted to save, if possible and other trees that needed to be shaped. They also removed the overhang from a neighbor's' tree that was almost to my phone line. and another neighbor's evergreens that were overhanging my yard.. They also cut down to the ground a burning bush that was oddly placed in my from yard. I definitely recommend they. The trees look so much better. They did exactly what needed to be done."

But if a tree is visibly dead and near the property line, you should remove it to be safe. If a dead tree falls on a neighbor’s property, they may have grounds to sue for negligence. If any branches on trees have died, it’s a good idea to cut them back for similar reasons.

Ideally, you’ll have a good enough relationship with your neighbors that you can kindly mention this task in regular conversation. However, every neighbor (and neighborhood) is different. Your best bet will always be to ask directly and nicely, offering to contribute to the tree trimming efforts if you’d like. However, if you are bothered by the tree and your neighbor is unwilling to cut it, you can involve the help of the homeowners’ association or local authorities, if applicable.

Ideally, you should wait to prune until trees have gone dormant in late fall to early winter. The worst times to prune trees are early fall and late summer, as pruning them so close to dormancy makes it difficult for the tree recover before it goes dormant for the season.

You should not trim an oak tree in the summer. Oak trees are especially susceptible to disease, and open tree wounds are an invitation for beetles that carry tree-killing fungus. If there’s no risk that the oak tree will do damage to your property or hurt someone, it’s best to save the trimming for fall or winter. If you can, seal the wound with latex to prevent fungus from getting inside.
