For high ceilings, chandeliers and pendant lights are great choices. They offer a decorative focal point to the room, while also illuminating the space. Track lighting may also be a good option for high ceilings as it allows you to position the lights around the space for all-over illumination.

A ceiling light will usually have two or three wires: black, white, and sometimes green. Black wires are positive, or hot, while white wires are negative, or neutral. The green wire is the grounding wire.

Most electricians should be able to fix lamps and individual light fixtures, but you might have difficulty hiring an electrician for such a small fix. Most of the time, electricians opt for larger jobs more specific to their expertise, like relocating fixtures and switches or fixing issues with electrical systems. A 13-watt CFL bulb can replace a 60-watt incandescent bulb, but a 6- to 8-watt LED bulb can offer the same amount of brightness. Fluorescent lights offer about 50 lumens per watt, while LEDs offer about 100 lumens per watt. LED light bulbs typically last two to three times as long as CFL bulbs, too.
