According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), fleas can carry human disease-causing pathogens for Plague, Flea-borne typhus, and Cat scratch disease. Both insects can damage wood, but there are key differences between termites and carpenter ants that tell them apart. In terms of appearance, carpenter ants have segmented bodies with heart-shaped heads and larger front wings, while termites have more oval bodies with straight antennae and equal-sized wings.

  • Blood or rust-colored stains on mattresses, fabrics, or upholstery

  • Dark spots of excrement that look like dots from a fine-tipped permanent marker

  • Tiny eggshells and yellowish shed skins

Fleas are not likely to go away on their own without intervention. This pest lives for around 100 days or up to one year as an adult, so long as it has access to a host. Female fleas lay up to 50 eggs per day, meaning these bugs can quickly spread in your home. Instead of waiting in hopes that they’ll go away on their own, you should hire an exterminator to prevent an infestation from worsening.

Bed bugs typically will not go away on their own. If there are no humans or animals around, they will need to leave to find a host for feeding. But otherwise, bed bugs can live for several months to a year, and the adult females can lay hundreds more eggs in their lifetime.
