"I had a flood starting in my basement when my sump pump went out. Luckily, when I called Paul (of PP's Plumbing) he was able to come right over and swap it out before the water really became a problem. He was fast, efficient and fair. I would trust all of my plumbing to Paul."

"Two people, a young man and a young woman (I think he said that she was the secretary)
arrived at the house a little bit late, I think because of the snow.
While he worked on the doors (2 doors & one sliding door) she was doing the caulking of the windows. My wife and I noticed that she applied some caulking on the same spot on each window. The caulking was always on the bottom part of the windows. We thought that since she was too short could not reach the sides or top part of the windows. When they left I checked the windows and noticed that there was no sign of caulk on the sides or top of the windows and very little on the bottom part of some windows. So, we don't think there was much improvement on the windows that she worked on.
The only positive thing is that two of the doors seem to have fewer leaks than before.
The young man told me that he wanted to check the attic; I told him that we had the attic inspected last year and I was told that the attic had enough insulation. I personally went in the attic with the inspector last year and he showed me the marks that indicated that the insulation was sufficient and showed me how to read the marks to determine when to add more insulation.
The young man told me that the attic needed more insulation and that they could do it for $3000.00. I did not do it because, again, just last year I was told that the attic was OK.
The young man charged me an extra $20.00 for material he used on the sliding door.
At the end I felt that I paid $300 + $20 for an unlimited winterization but they only worked on 3 doors.
They worked for about 3 and 1/2 hours.
Next day I checked the sliding door and I had to put tape on the weather strip to keep it in place.
Also, the next day my wife noticed we did not have hot water. So, she thought the water heater was bad and called a company to fix it. When the company arrived they said that the water heater had been set to pilot. My wife told me that she remember the young man saying that he needed to turn off the water heater or move the control to pilot. So we paid this other company $125.00 for a service call just because Brand New Construction forgot to put the water heater back to the ON position.
So, what it was supposed to be $299 for Unlimited Winterization Home Package, turned out to be $444.00 ($299 + $20 +$125) for replacing the weather strip on two doors and one sliding door. I realized I could have done that myself and save at least $400.00.

"Another company was unable to clear the main sewer drain and wanted to up-sell an additional $900 to run a camera down it and use a water jet to try and clear it. I sent them packing and called Plumbing Professors. On time and got the drain cleared at a very reasonable price. I would not hesitate to use them again and recommend them to others."

Water Heaters questions, answered by experts

Every type of water heater has its advantages and disadvantages. Understanding those can help you decide the best type for your situation and budget.

Pros

  • Safer than gas or propane

  • Doesn’t require extensive venting systems

  • Lower upfront costs

  • Simpler to operate

  • No pilot light

  • Easier installation

  • More efficient heating than gas models

  • Available as point-of-use (POU) and whole-house units

Cons

  • Slower to heat water

  • Longer recovery time

  • Possibly higher operating costs

  • Doesn’t work during a power outage

  • Costs can increase without a 240-volt connection

Installing a water heater without a permit can result in high fines—as much as hundreds of dollars per day, in some areas. It can also void your homeowners' insurance and cause problems when selling your home because it violates local building codes and safety regulations.

A single shower consumes an average of over 17 gallons, while brushing your teeth with the water running uses up to four unnecessary gallons. Watering the lawn spreads hundreds of gallons of water across the yard each time. Limiting water usage in these areas can significantly cut down your water bill.

If your water heater is about to celebrate the big 2-0, you may want to consider sending it off to greener pastures. While the water heater may seem to be working well, any conventional, tanked water heater over 10 years of age is at risk of failure. If your water heater is 20 years or older, your best move is to replace your aging heater before it completely breaks down.

A water heater is one of the heaviest hitters in your home, and it needs as much power as possible to help it run efficiently and effectively.

Your water heater should be on its own dedicated circuit breaker, with no other power sources running to it. This is required to meet the National Electric Code–and to ensure it runs as efficiently as possible.
