"I called around to many Pest Controllers, and Average Joe's was the first to answer my call, and was able to come out same day, on a Saturday. Over the phone, he said that to look at it would be free, and if caulk was put up, it could be around $200. When he arrived, we explained that there was actually no caulk put up like we thought. He still charged us $200. (so that was strange, because 200 was with caulk, then turned out to charge us the 200) He sprayed for 10 minutes, said they would all be dead within 24 hours, and to call him if that was not the case. It took about 4 days for us not to see a single bee in our bedroom. On the 5th day, we were ready to call, but no more bees. I think it was good that he came out right away, and gave a free estimate, but then charged us more than what he said. So that part was frustrating. But in the end, we have no more bees coming in our bedroom, so the main issue was resolved."

Pest Control questions, answered by experts

Yes. Cellar spiders are predatory and feed on other insects, including other spiders. They eat flies, mosquitos, gnats, moths, and larger prey. That larger prey includes venomous spiders like the brown recluse and the black widow.  Basically, a cellar spider is pretty brave and will feed on anything that gets into its web, no matter the size.

Spider egg sacs are meant to last, so you can't crush them. One of the best ways to deal with them is to vacuum them up and then quickly dispose of your debris in the trash so the egg sacs leave your property permanently. Egg sacs surrounded by little spiderlings means that it has already hatched, but you may be able to catch many of these with a vacuum cleaner, too.

No, you should never vacuum or sweep up mouse or rat droppings, as doing so can release harmful particles into the air and increase your risk of disease exposure. Instead, wear gloves and a mask, spray the droppings with a disinfectant spray, let it soak for a few minutes, and then carefully wipe them up with paper towels. Afterward, disinfect the area thoroughly and immediately wash your hands when you’re done.

The longevity of pest control treatment depends on the treatments and the type of pest. Pest control services for serious infestations can last 3 to 6 months. Some treatments are more or less permanent if the pro fixes how pests were entering the home. Other treatments, like sprayed barriers or bait traps, are designed to last for anywhere from 30 days to several months. Pest control often offers to re-apply treatments like this to ensure full eradication and discourage new infestations.

When it comes to keeping birds from doing their business on your porch rails, you have several DIY options and home remedies you can try:

  • Tie a fishing line from one end of the deck post to the other. Birds won’t be able to see the line across the railing, so they can’t land on it.

  • Hang wind chimes close by, which may scare birds away.

  • Apply a bird gel repellent to the railings, which contains smells that birds generally don’t like. Or, similarly, you can apply citronella or lemon oil around the railings, since birds don’t like strong smells.
