"Kenny arrived at my home to install a light switch and back patio light that was non existent at the time. Kenny was on time and very professional. I had purchased a patio light before the installation and had to return to work and left Kenny to do his work. Kenny called me and told me that the light I purchased did not have the brackets that it should have had. Kenny took my light back to Lowes and brought back a new one and installed my light. I arrived home to my new light and switch and he cleaned up the area as if no one was even there. I will use Bruton electric again! Great Job!"

"I used Grand Bay Electric to replace outdoor receptacles to weather related outlets. Ethan and Christian displayed professionalism, friendliness and respect to my home. I believe the quote to be fair and honest. I also liked Maizey in the office who answered and sent text messages when my appointment moved up a day on their schedule. 5 star company and people!"

Small jobs welcome

"The entire project was such a great experience. From the moment I first requested a quote online, Mike has been very responsive (within minutes) and so great to deal with. After talking to a few references provided to me, I decided to proceed with a whole house generator install and new power to my shed out back. They easily worked around my schedule since this is a vacation home. They installed everything in 1.5 days and arrived on time as promised. The entire team was such a pleasure to work with. They prided themselves in making sure they left the place as clean as possible. Don't be swayed by a lack of online reviews. Highly recommend you give them a shot!"

"We have a smoke alarm that is located 20 feet u from the floor. Several people declined to come out, including one that wanted $89 just to come and give us an estimate. The $89 did not apply toward the estimate if we accepted. Richard Riley, from Electrical Edge, had us text a picture and said he would be happy to do the job. He showed up on time and was very professional. We plan to use him on some other projects as well. Chris and Chuck Gibson Scotts, MI"

Generator Install questions, answered by experts

The cost to install a whole-house generator averages $5,200, with a typical price range of $1,500 to $8,900. However, total costs can vary from $400 for a small portable unit to over $18,000 for a large-capacity system. The most significant cost factor is the generator's size and capacity, but other variables include the brand, fuel type, and labor for assembly and installation.

Generator costs can be broken down by type:

  • Portable or Emergency Backup Generators (1kW–7.5kW): $500 to $2,000

  • Partial-Home Generators (9kW–20kW): $2,000 to $6,500

  • Whole-House Generators (22kW–48kW): $5,000 to $18,000

To avoid paying for more power than you need, consider hiring an electrician to calculate the electrical load for your essential appliances. It is also recommended to get at least three quotes to find the best deal for your specific needs and budget.

You can determine what size generator you need for a transfer switch by matching the switch to the largest outlet on your generator. Larger generators can power up to 10 circuits, while most 5,000-watt generators can provide power to six circuits. So, if your generator’s largest outlet is 30 amps, you’ll need a 30-amp transfer switch.

Yes, natural gas generators can work without electricity. Natural gas generators are a common type of backup or whole-house generator that operates when the electrical grid isn’t working. The trick is using a transfer switch (which usually needs to be installed with the generator) that safely switches the home electrical system from the power grid to generator power when needed.

If you have a transfer switch properly installed, the generator and main electrical power cannot feed the system at the same time. However, you should still shut off the power at your main circuit breaker panel before activating the generator. If you do that, you’ll simply need to shut off the generator and reset your circuit breaker once the local power comes back on.

Costs depend on generator type, labor, and additional wiring or transfer switch requirements.
