"I hired Kim for two houses, my mom and mine for a cleaning every 2 weeks. The first time she came she was good but very slow. She cleaned the upstairs in 3 hours and did not have time for the downstairs or the kitchen. I thought that she was being through and did not think anything of it. I have lots of furniture and baby toys around. But then she was slow at the house of my mom too. My mom does not have a lot of furniture. She did not even move the couches to clean under them. Then this week she canceled coming to my the house of my mom saying she had a migraine. No other text to reschedule. Today she canceled the job at my house saying that it is hard to clean wearing a mask. With COVID I can not risk her getting us sick. She said she does not wear a mask at the house of anybody else while she is cleaning. Well, I understand medical reasons not to wear a mask but she could have told me that two weeks ago after she cleaned my house the first time. I would not have time to find someone else to clean my house today so last minute. I think communication could have been much better. I have nothing against her being sick but not letting me know what other days she could come to the house of my mom was unprofessional, and canceling the cleaning for today at the last minute was very unprofessional. This is my only day off and I have two kids on top of cleaning the house today and laundry. I depended on her and she let me down. I do recommend her if you need someone on occasion but I would not depend on her for frequent visits or if you are worried about her spreading COVID."

"Jaime is a wonderful, personable, efficient, accommodating person. She helped me out on very short notice, and was very sweet about it. I would highly recommend her, and am so glad that I found her on Home Advisor. She will be my housekeeper every two weeks for as far into the future as I can see!"

House Cleaning questions, answered by experts

The average house cleaner cost is around $180, which should cover about four hours of work. However, each project is different and costs can range from $100 to $1,000, depending on the house size and the cleaning needed. Other cost factors can include your location and what level of cleaning you want. Standard or basic cleaning may include vacuuming, dusting, and disinfecting the kitchen and bathrooms. Deep cleaning costs about twice as much and often includes cleaning behind and underneath furniture, washing windows, and polishing hard-to-clean surfaces. Emergency cleaning, extreme cleaning, and holidays also impact pricing. Move-in and move-out cleaning typically cost more, too, because of the extensive, whole-house cleaning involved.

You can remove stubborn stains from your toilet by scrubbing with a store-bought cleaner appropriate for the toilet’s material. If you’re looking for a homemade solution, you can also use vinegar and baking soda—just pour 2 cups of white vinegar around the edges of your toilet. Once the bowl is wet with vinegar, sprinkle 3 tablespoons of baking soda, concentrating on the stains. Scrub the bowl with a toilet brush and flush to clean the mixture.

Just a note: While combining baking soda and vinegar is OK, never mix that solution with any other cleaners.

Cleaning behind your fridge once every three months is a good goal to stick to. This helps keep messes to a minimum and ensures it runs efficiently. Seasonal cleaning will also remove dropped food and food residue that can act as pest attractants, so keeping this area clean can help keep your household healthier, too.

If it’s been a while between cleanings, then further elbow grease is needed. To help with caked- on stains, create a solution of distilled vinegar and water, then soak the rough side of the sponge and scrub.

Yes, if you’re strapped for supplies, boiling hot water can be a great alternative for getting rid of soap scum. However, as this method calls for a bit of soaking, it’s best used when cleaning your bathroom sink or bath basin (or on small objects you can submerge). All you have to do is plug your sink or bathtub drain and pour in enough boiling water to cover the soap scum. Allow it to soak for five minutes, drain, and follow up with an additional hot water rinse to remove any lingering residue.
