"L&B Services did a tear down and rebuild of an old deck. They really know how to build a solid deck with poured cement footings, sauna tubes, and sturdy lumber. Bob was very good at keeping us informed of the work to be done and the timeline. The deck was done on time. It is a large deck (30x12) with 3 sets of stairs, dog gates, and skirting. The end result was a sturdy deck that will last for decades. Very easy and personable group to work with."

Small jobs welcome

"We hired them to build a deck; they did an awesome job. Very polite and considerate Was sure that we could get in and out of our home with a 13-year-old greyhound. They were sure that no debris was left scattered. We have actually hired them to come back and shingle our roof."

"F & L services exceeded our expectations. So much of finding the right contractor, painters in this case, can be an arduous process. Sara and Jim bring a level of skill and professionalism that's extremely hard to find. Both are hard working, conscientious, and trustworthy. We've used them on two jobs and the process couldn't have been easier. We already are lining up a third job for them to paint our pool. My wife and I cannot recommend them enough."

"Nick, Roger, and Mark did a great job painting the walls in our house. We love the colors and are very satisfied with the work. They showed up when they said they would and worked steadily all day. They cleaned up nicely when they were finished. Very personable crew - you will be happy you hired them. Shanna deals with the business end and responds quickly to inquiries."

"It was amazing. Andy was super friendly, prompt and efficient. The materials he uses are eco-friendly which I really liked. I never would have imagined how nice the wood under the paint was if it weren't for him so I was very happy with the work."

"Jon and his crew were great. Our house looks incredible and we get so many comments about it. I have since heard what other people were charged by other companies to have their houses painted, and Jon is by far the best priced. We are having him come back next summer to paint the trim on our garage."

Deck Staining questions, answered by experts

Deciding whether to stain or paint a pool deck depends on your budget, desired look, and the deck's material. Both options can work. Paint offers a wider variety of color options, provides excellent water resistance, and can last longer. However, it requires a primer and can eventually fade or peel. Stain is often cheaper, easier to apply, and penetrates the wood for a more natural look and longer-lasting finish. It also has great water resistance. The downsides are fewer color options and the need for a sealant. The choice can also depend on the deck material; for example, staining may be a better option for concrete as it bonds well and lasts longer than paint.

Wood stain does go bad, but it will last in the can for between three and six years, provided you use proper storage techniques. Storing wood stain in open containers or in extremely low or high temperatures will cause your wood stain to become unusable much more quickly. Water- and latex-based wood stains typically last for just two to four years, while oil-based wood stains can last for three to six years.

The number of coats you need to apply when whitewashing a surface depends on how opaque you want the final product to be. If you're going for a transparent, barely there look, a single coat or two may suffice. For fuller coverage, you'll want to use multiple coats. Another option is to use a less diluted paint to get a thicker coverage.

Yes, you can and should paint or stain pressure-treated wood to help prevent the boards from cracking. However, you must wait for the wood to dry out completely before applying any finish. Freshly treated wood can take weeks or even months to dry; a common recommendation is to wait three to six months. To check if the wood is ready, perform a simple water test: drip some water onto the surface. If the water beads up, the wood is still too wet and needs more time to dry. If the wood absorbs the water, it is dry enough to be painted or stained. You can proceed with building your deck or fence while the wood is still wet, but you will need to wait to apply the paint or stain.

Hiring a contractor or professional deck refinisher is the best way to ensure your deck is properly stained. They have the expertise, tools, and supplies to do the job quickly and efficiently. However, staining a deck is a manageable task for most homeowners, and doing the job yourself can save money. Just keep in mind that DIY staining is a long process requiring physical strain, so it may not be the best option for everyone.
