Brandon Hall, specializing in quality caretaking while servicing and managing properties in the Central and Midcoast Maine Area. We can do just about anything with the outside of your home; building curb appeal and increasing the value! Whether you're away on vacation, a snowbird, or needing a watchful eye on your home/camp, I am there to help and keep peace of mind.

"I suspected they were charging me for plows that they were not doing but could never count. I would?ve been fine with some overcharges if the job had been done in a timely manner, but at times it wasn?t. When asking if they were on their way one evening after a night snow they never responded to me, but did come and plow soon after. The following year I sent them an email when my spouse and I both got laid off and they also didn?t bother to respond. Shortly after that, it snowed and I was charged for plows, long after I had canceled?but yet my driveway hadn?t even done! So that confirmed my suspicions. When I emailed them back again, there was also no response. No apology or anything. Lack of communication and bad track of plowing. Beware!!"

Lawns questions, answered by experts

Hiring a lawn service company can free up your schedule for other tasks and ensure high-quality results. However, doing some of the maintenance yourself can reduce your monthly costs. Another factor to consider if it's worth it is whether you already own lawn equipment and tools you will need to keep your yard looking lush. Ultimately, it depends on your budget, schedule, and the type of tasks you need to complete.

It’s a good idea to aerate your lawn in the fall or spring when there is plenty of moisture in the soil. If you plan to aerate twice annually, you can do so once in the fall and once in the spring. You don’t want to aerate when your grass is dormant, and you also don’t want to aerate directly after a big rain, as the soil will be too wet for the aeration to be effective.

While dethatching first often makes the aeration process faster and easier, both actions can be done on the same day. Aeration can also loosen up the thatch, even if you have a harder time aerating the soil because the thatch got too thick. Because both dethatching and aeration have the common goal of making it easier for the soil to get water and nutrients, it’s safe and possible to do both at the same time.

While you may see some germination by simply tossing a handful of new seeds on a lawn, you'll have more success by following the proper reseeding or overseeding process step-by-step. Without properly tilling, mowing, amending the soil, and watering your lawn, the new seed could blow away or simply fail to take root.

You can try that, but it isn't likely to yield results. It's like watering potted plants without putting the seeds in. Most of the tossed grass seeds sit on top of the soil or existing grass blades and never germinate. The seeds need to make it into the soil, just like growing a potted plant. The best way to accomplish this is to aerate your lawn first, then overseed.
