The proper height for a gate latch is between 34 and 48 inches above the ground. This height will not only be comfortable for you and your family to use, but it’ll also ensure that your latch complies with the International Building Code.

Sometimes one-way latches are installed very high on the gate to make it easier to open, although it’s only easier for tall people. Installing a two-way latch at the proper height is a good idea.

Bi-fold doors need clearance to fold into the wall, so they eat up a few feet of space. They are hard to move in snow or high wind. Many homeowners now choose sliding or sectional-style doors for smoother daily use.

You can attach the hinges to either the door or the frame first, depending on your preference. The order will not affect how the door hangs or the ease of installation. Barn doors do not always require a bottom track, especially if a high-quality top track is used to stabilize the door. However, a bottom track is often recommended to ensure the door operates smoothly, prevent it from scratching the floor, and keep it from pushing inward or outward, which could cause damage. A bottom track also keeps the door more secure and properly anchored. In some cases, an interior barn door can hang solely from a top track without a bottom guide. If you do install a bottom track, it should be placed six to eight inches from the floor and be at least twice as wide as the door.

If you don’t know which door sweep to buy, look into getting a strip or bristle sweep. They’re easy to find at the store, work well for most doors, and the simple installation is DIYable. Before buying one, measure your door width and make sure the one you want is long enough. Most door sweeps are 36 inches long, and you can cut them down to size with a hacksaw.
