"We have been extremely happy with the work done by Paradise Construction. Most recently, we contracted the reconstruction of our finished basement room following a water event and also had them rebuild our deck from the ground up. The company’s principal, Lance Paradis, is a very competent, exacting and professional builder. He keeps his customers well informed about the status of the projects, keeps to the agreed schedule and the quality of the work is always excellent. All permit inspections were met with no exceptions. We would recommend Paradise Construction and Lance Paradis very highly. Five stars!"

"Not being native Mainers, new to the area and not knowing any contractors or tradespeople in the area,  we had several unfortunate experiences in our initial attempts to identify a reliable contractor.  As our time spent at the camp was often short and/or sporadic,  we needed someone who would show up on schedule (while we were visiting the camp) and get the repairs done on time.  Dave did that. As we became more familiar with the quality of the work that Dave and his crew did, we felt secure in knowing that even if we weren't present, the work would still get done correctly.  This was a great relief to us. I don't recall Dave ever being late to the site, or the work taking longer or costing more than was originally agreed upon.  We found his prices to be extremely reasonable and the quality of the work to be very good. In honesty, I can't find any fault with the services he provided, and we would certainly use his services again (exclusively)."

"Chris took my rough design, refined it and used his drawing for permitting and as a guide for subcontractors. Chris supervised excavation the foundation pour, utility connections and a variety of specialty contractors including plumbing and electrical, wallboard and plaster including the a very nice ceiling, windows and roofing. He did all the framing, rough and finish carpentry, flooring including tile, himself. There was no element of the build where he wasn’t intimately involved. Chris was considerate of my ideas, and enhanced and often expanded on the them. He was conscious of my budget and stretched my dollars without sacrificing quality. Two years later when a sliding door seal failed he replaced the door at no charge. My home is modest but “feels” bigger and more expensive than what it was. It is open concept with a lot of natural light. It takes advantage of passive solar heating and with my wood stove this 1800 square foot house makes it through the coldest winter without turning on the gas heat yet only consumed two cords of wood! It’s too bad Chris moved to the coast, contractors with integrity and skill are not easy to find. Our community’s loss, is Coastal Maine’s gain. I would be happy to recommend Chris to anyone in need of his many skills."

"Highly recommended. Jose and Cesar were great. They were reliable and their work was excellent. They completely remodeled our condo including 4 bathrooms, floors, fireplace/hearth, etc. It was a big job and they worked with us to make sure everything came out exactly the way we wanted. The cost was very reasonable."

Small jobs welcome

"Kaydn was great to deal with! It was very refreshing to work with a contractor who acted like he wanted your business. I've had dealings with a couple different contractors in this process and Kaydn was extremely responsive, did fantastic work and the price was great! I will definitely reach out to K & A Renovations for my next project."

"We hired Garrett  to build an attached mudroom and garage to our home.  After interviewing many contractors, we decided to go with Garrett. Don't let his age  scare you. We found him to be hard working, honest, caring fair and professional.  We were very impressed with his quote. Everything was spelled out. None of our other quotes were broken down like Garrett's.  During the work if there was any issue, Garrett dealt with it immediately.      We would highly  recommend Garrett R Gerard Construction and if we build anything again we would definitely  use Garrett again."

"I met Dan Garvey through Angie’s list when i found a home I wanted to purchase, the bank needed an estimate on how much work needed to be done. I contacted Angie’s list and Dan amongst others reached out for the job . After reading & researching the company’s I went w/Garvey Construction & glad I did… Dan met me at the property and gave me an estimate , explained everything in detail what the job would entail. Explained in a way I could fully understand… Though I got outbid on the property I will definitely be calling Garvey , Dan in particular when I do find my dream home for any repairs or changes I want done … Thank u Garvey Construction for your time and look forward to hiring by in the future for any jobs I will need done…"

Unfinished Carpentry questions, answered by experts

By careful planning and reinforcement to maintain structural integrity.

Homeowners can increase the usefulness of their garage space in other ways, and one option is to extend the length of the garage by making it deeper. The process is similar to traditional garage extensions, but the end product is a garage with a different layout rather than additional parking spaces.

Learning how to frame a house includes picking the right lumber for the job. Most people will want to pick pine, spruce, or fir for the framing. These types of lumber are affordable and produce sturdy framing for structures. Look for kiln-dried lumber to reduce the risk of shrinkage or insect damage after installation. As part of what’s included in framing a house when you hire a professional, the contractor should order the lumber, so you don’t have to worry about finding the right lumber.

An A-frame home can be cheaper to build than a traditional house, but that is not always a given. Prices can be fairly similar in some cases, depending on the location, design, and necessary site preparation. Costs for an A-frame typically run between $100 to $200 per square foot, which is comparable to the cost of a traditional home. The cost of an A-frame can come in under those numbers if you opt for a prefabricated kit.

Bump-out additions can add some space to a closet without requiring any significant structural work. This entails pushing back the existing rear or side of the closet, simply moving the wall into either an adjacent room or unused space. For ground-floor closets, this could even be extended to the exterior of the home, but that has its own complications. Bump-outs are a good discussion to have with your contractor if you’re just looking to increase the space a little—not renovate the entire closet space.
