"A rodent chewed a pin hole opening in one of the plastic pipes under my kitchen sink. I could see that everything was very wet, including electrical wiring, but I could not see where the water was coming from. I searched for a plumber in my town because my previous one had just retired. They came in less than an hour. They used a cell phone to take pictures and showed me the one of the damaged section. The water meter had previously been moved inside to meet town regulations, which accounts for the electrical wiring. If I had not found help quickly, a lot of damage might have resulted."

"Nate did an excellent job and I would hire him again. He is a great communicator via text, phone and in-person. He let me know the days that he would be doing work at my house and he texted me about half an hour in advance to let me know that he was on the way. Nate installed a drainage system, which involved using jackhammers to dig a trench around 75% of the interior wall of my basement. He repaired 3 large cracks in my basement wall, installed 2 sump pumps, and installed a drainage system into my yard. Nate was able to work around unexpected issues. For example, we discovered that my house sits on ledge, which made the jackhammering more difficult and which required modifying the original sump pump plan. Nate is friendly and easy to work with. His crew was great too. They lugged a LOT of debris out of my house to Nate’s trailer. Nate and his crew cleaned up the work areas. This was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had with anyone who has done a big job at my house."

Drain Pipe Installation questions, answered by experts

Your clothes—and your washing machine—will send you a few signals if you’re overdue for cleaning your washing machine filter. If you notice a buildup of detergent residue on your clothes, your clothes don’t dry quickly or at all, or you’re noticing lint in the machine, it’s time to clean the filter.

Simple blockages can be cleared using household plungers or manual snakes, provided no severe plumbing issues exist.

Yes—your local septic company can clean your septic leach lines with a sewer jetter, a device that pumps high-pressure water through the lines to blast out any clogs and scum buildup. Unless there’s a clog or blockage in the lines, however, you do not need to perform this maintenance regularly. Do not attempt to clean your own leach lines, as you could easily damage them, leading to very costly repairs.

No, you should not see water in a sewer cleanout. If you do, it could indicate that you have a block or leak in your main sewer line—which can cause sewage to back up inside your home and potentially flood your yard. Your best bet is to call a local sewer cleaner if you notice any water or sewage around your cleanout.

The cost to unclog a drain varies based on the location and severity of the clog. For simple clogs within your home, such as in a sink, toilet, or shower, hiring a plumber typically costs between $110 and $350, with an average of around $200. Snaking a toilet or sink usually costs between $110 and $275, while a bathtub or shower clog costs about $225.

For a more serious clog in the main sewer line, the cost is higher. Clearing a main line clog generally costs between $200 and $600, with an average of about $380. However, prices can range from as low as $100 for snaking a minor clog to over $1,600, particularly if advanced methods like video inspection and hydrojetting are needed for a large or hard-to-reach blockage. Some severe main line clogs can cost upwards of $1,000 to clear depending on factors like the cause of the clog, its distance from an accessible cleanout, and whether the pipe is located beneath an occupied space (e.g., in an apartment building). You may be able to save money on minor clogs by using a drain snake or bladder yourself.
